Lilly Settles Mississippi Zyprexa Claims For $18.5 Million

News is out that Eli Lilly has settled yet another lawsuit with yet another state over claims that the company illegally marketed its antipsychotic Zyprexa for unapproved uses. This time out it's $18.5 million to the State of Mississippi. That brings Lilly's total settlements to date to around $2.8 billion and there's still more to go.

Adding an interesting twist to the whole off label issue, the other day I was in a CVS and saw this thick paperback guide for sale with a title to the effect of Pharmaceutical Drugs. The gist of it was a compendium of off label uses that readers might want to take advantage of, on the "cutting edge" of medicine. The whole idea of the book seems inaccurate and irresponsible. "Ask your doctor about terrific new unapproved uses he could write you a scrip for! It's cutting edge!" I'll try to find the exact title.

Oh, and I wonder if Lilly gets to write off the fines from its taxes? When if ever do companies' corporate charters get revoked?!

This is a good one but a drop in the bucket for them. I'd love to see a jaw-dropping slap in the bank account for them.

I would be interested in knowing if any mental health consumers have sued their prescribers over the health consequences of the prescriber's failure to comply with the ADA/APA's 2004 monitoring protocol for antipsychotics. Afterall, it has been estimated that only 10% of prescribers follow the protocol.

In regards to Jan 26, 2010 post comment on obesity and DSM subject, I'm still fuming over becoming hyperglycemic from risperdal usage over the past 7 years. Only one half of milligram dosage got be injured. I hate getting seriously injured. In any case the following article or medical study from March 2008 Neuropyshopharmacology 'journal' is interesting and could hold some therapeutic value for SGA induced metabolic injuries. THe study:

"Zonisamide Prevents Olanzapine - associated hyperphagia, weight gain, and elevated blood glucose in Rats." Nicholas Wallingford et al.

An excerpt from the study: "These results suggest the hypothesis that ZNS may effectively treat or prevent weight gain or metabolic changes associated with the SGA's." End quote. A recent near two year old study from the spring of 2008, this report is, and could hold some future potent treatments for the hyperglycemic and diabetes conditions brought on by the SGA's. Possibly subsequent information is out there on the internet concerning zonisamide.

It brings to light the phrase "informed consent", how many doctors/psychiatrists actually give detailed information on the drug, it's side effects etc.

My head is spinning, and no its not from pharm but from information. Dear dear young man was placed on seroquel 100mg for GAD, he morphed into episodes of paranoya, delusions, uphoria, cog deficits and the list goes on. Psych now thinks he's bipolar with psychosis, upted the dose to 900mg and said he needed time to adjust, things just got worse and worse.

Dr was angry at our research of side effects, family frantic at the change in him so dr is bleeding him off for the next few days. BUT BUT BUT he's been given Zyprexa instead!

Guess what, we are in Australia and at no time has the patient or family been told of the possible serious and adverse affects of either drug, and there has been no blood tests or monitoring arranged at all. de ja vu!

Can anyone tell me how to get my hands on any issues coming out in Australia, or if any of whats happened(ing)in the states is even known here?!?!

Shocked and want answers!

Cheers JJ
