Stephany, Linds Lose Their Fight With Washington State's Mental Health System

It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you all that Stephany of Soulful Sepulcher yesterday lost her three-year fight to keep her daughter Lindsay out of Western State Hospital here in Washington State. Stephany has written about the loss here.

Linds, as she's known, was sent there because there's no other placement for her even though a King County Superior Court judge found her not to be a danger to her self or others. She is instead at danger from society...ie, being hit by cars because she has a habit of walking off from her housing. Linds is officially diagnosed with schizophrenia or psychosis NOS, depending on who's diagnosing, but her mom makes a compelling case for Linds having autism.

Linds is 21 with the capacity of about a 13 year old. She was at WSH for about two weeks a few years ago and got molested by one of the male patients. I'm hoping to God that doesn't happen this time, but the last time I checked there were 19 registered sex offenders at WSH. While I suppose most of those are guys in WSH's forensic unit (ie, jail), there are likely some on the general adult units. A young woman like Linds is--excuse the expression--fresh meat to them and if one of those creeps goes after her I will hit the roof.

The system is bad enough already, but women should not have to face the prospect of sexual abuse. Same for the men.

Stephany has fought heroically for three years in ways that I have never seen a parent fight for a child. She and Linds deserved a better outcome. I hope they get one soon.

Terrible news.

May I make a suggestion to all your readers Phil?

PLEASE head on over to Steph's blog, Phil has provided the link in his article.

Offer her your support folks. Steph has been supportive of many causes and blogs since she began writing back in 2007.

We owe her one.

I read Stephany's blog daily and for some reason I am unable to comment there. Stephany has shown real moxie and wonderful dedication to her daughter's plight. I am heartsick about this and it only shows the heartlessness of the "system" to the absolute extreme. Can nothing be done to help these extraordinary people? The whole caae from beginning until now is an outrage.

Thank you, Philip very much for this article, I admit to tears flowing when I read it, I will not give up, thank you to everyone sending their support to me and my daughter, it is encouraging at a time when I need courage, so thank you all.

The judge deemed her " not a danger to self" "not a danger to others" "but a vulnerable person in society who can suffer harm and exploitation".

The answer in this state is the state hospital, which is so wrong. There are no other places, very few housing situations for so many people, she is not the only one being sent there, for that reason. I've seen it happen.

Again, thank you for the support it means much to me.

I was heartbroken when I read this. I will continue to support Steph as well as keeping them in my prayers.

I'm speechless but I have to go to Stephany first.
I'm feeling bad because I didn't know it through her blog.

Stephany,
You don't need only support. You need action.
CALL FOR ACTION!

It is unacceptable. PERIOD.
Let's make them see it.

Our hearts go out to you, Stephany, -- you and your beautiful daughter.

Sometimes even a mother's tremendous love and devotion cannot prevent bad things from happening to their children.

Our prayers are with you. God Bless.

Thank you all, there was a positive meeting with the doctor and she was OK today, to my relief. Is being closely monitored and the doctor is open-minded and taking a total medical history unlike any other doctor to begin with, thyroid and metabolic issues unknown to me have been discovered by this doctor, and the goal is "less meds the better" which of course is always good to hear.

Thanks for the support, in this world, it is good to know you all care.

Stephany, I am so sorry! I have been following your daughter's story and was so wishing that she wouldn't have to go to Western.

Stephany, I seem to have forgotten my google password so I'll comment here. They better treat her right. We're watching.

((((Stephany))) Ive admired you for the past couple of years--such sad news for you-speechless from NZ--

I have too upset over this to write- Stephany is one of the few selfless people I have ever met. I cannot imagine this is happening to her and her daughter.

I would gladly trade places with L- I don't want to see someone- anyone put in these places....... I was in one in my 30s, I cannot imagine being put in one in my 20s. surely there can be a safe haven to place her?

Shame on you Washington for giving this the green light. Would you be acting like this if it was YOUR daughter, your niece, your granddaughter?

I too have been having trouble writing. Which isn't very helpful, now, is it? I don't have a Google account so I can't post on Stephanie's blog so I hope you see this here, Stephanie.

I was thinking about you and your daughter all day yesterday. I've been so busy adjusting to my new job that I haven't been reading your blog. I've missed it. Quite apart from your dedication to your daughter, you are just one of the neatest people I've met on line. I love reading about your walks, seeing your pictures.

2010 really can only improve, given its starting point.

Slan agus beannacht to you and Linds.

Thank you all very much for your thoughtful comments to me here and my blog, the support means much to me. thank you, from my heart.

She hasn't been outside of the ward since her arrival on December 21, 2009, I am pretty sure DSHS would agree that is unacceptable, and the budget woes just don't cut it as an answer to one to one staff availability. The budget is not my daughter's problem, but the ACLU can become yours.
