December 18, 2009Seroquel For Bipolar Depression TV Ads RunningI haven't seen myself yet, since they are reportedly running regionally until the New Year, but I've heard from readers and have read one press account of a wave of TV, print and online ads touting Seroquel, the truly nasty atypical antipsychotic, for bipolar depression. I presume these ads will soon morph into a Seroquel as an add-on depression treatment soon enough. You can get a feel for the ads on the Seroquel website. “Bipolar depression doesn't just affect you--it can consume you,” state the ads. Oh really? That's quite the statement. I'll have more to say about the TV ads when I see one. There was an ad for Seroquel as a bipolar depression treatment on the New York Times main web page last evening. Hopefully, we don't get Quell ads on MySpace and such this time out (yes, AZ was running ads on that site in late 2005). Posted by Philip Dawdy at December 18, 2009 12:03 AM

These adds have been the first 6 pages in Time the last few issues. Posted by: Tilting at Windmills at December 18, 2009 06:28 AMAds are already running at ABC news web sites: "Bipolar depression doesn't just affect you--it can consume you" Then there is truth in advertising: Bipolar depression doesn't just affect you, at AstraZeneca we intent for it to consume you. If you think you were depressed before, just wait; at AstraZeneca we can help you pack on those extra pounds to improve that low self esteem; then give you some beautiful metabolic conditions (including diabetes and pancreatic disease) that are sure to hook you in as a life long consumer. It gets even better: can you spell "Sudden Heart Attack" If that doesn't work; we will have you increase the dose and our profits until your nothing more than a mindless babbling zombie stumbling through life with our FDA approved chemical blinders on. So please America, continue to be stupid. You morons must continue to fall for are wonderful marketing ads, and take Seroquel or Seroquel-XR. NAMI says it's good, so it must be good! We @ AZ pay them a lot of your money to get that dangerous message across. Next round of advertisements will focus on this important buried study #15 fact: "Take Seroquel, or you will Die" Posted by: MadMan at December 18, 2009 08:12 AMYep they are running it here-constantly. I'm not a TV person so my husband said WTF and got me to look. It ran on every commercial break from 8 to 11 pm (mixed in with the other commercials of course). I watch a show tonight and am going to see how much it's on. This is out of control. Posted by: Lili at December 18, 2009 10:54 AMhttp://www.imagebam.com/image/5a508258991597 - I scanned in the entire 6 page Time magazine ad for posterity purposes in case anyone's interested. Posted by: Scott at December 18, 2009 11:13 AMHUH??? From the article: Seroquel is the only drug that has street value in the United States. "When snorted, it acts like cocaine," said Koch. Seroquel acts like coke when snorted??? Why do I find THAT hard to believe? Posted by: kimbriel at December 18, 2009 11:17 AMI like MadMan's comment. And I guess it's just me but I don't understand how it works for depression. Somnolence is one of the top side effects - in fact, many people take it for sleep. And as an antipsychotic I hear people say it is a major chill pill. How does this help depression? Anyway, one time we used one tiny dose of Seroquel with my son and it knocked him out into a dead sleep so fast I thought he was in a coma. Scared the hoo-ha out of me. We'll never do that again. Posted by: Meg at December 18, 2009 02:28 PMIt doesn't work for depression, that's they key point! just like Cymbalta didn't work for depression so Lilly marketed it for PAIN, though it's an anti depressant! AstraZeneca is all about the patent expiration date! this is just anther marketing tactic to keep the drug on top of the $$$$$$ sales until it goes generic. Squeezing every last dime out of that drug is their goal. People DUE abuse the drug in prison, it DOES have a street value, it DOES have withdrawal effects, and it knocks ppl out like a train wreck for sleep and others it wires! The base of the ingredient was out sourced to China a while back, honestly who the hell knows what is in that shit, but the FDA keeps pimping its stamp of approval on a street marketable prescrition medication designed for SZ "treatment", Study 15 was buried from the doctors and the FDA, (Tony Jewell objects) and that study was going to show the weight gain (bad as Zyprexa) and diabetes problems. It's a marketing dream come true, new ads, new patients, new suckers born every minute! Victims of corporate crime! Posted by: Stephany at December 18, 2009 03:23 PMThe bottom line is, anyone who has ever taken Seroquel, even off-label for insomnia for example--will agree that it knocks you out, puts you in a brain fog beyond belief, and maybe that's what people need to hear: If you are depressed, and want a pick-me-up...Seroquel is not exactly the drug of choice! It's a tranquilizer for God's sake! You'd be better off eating your favorite junk food and watching a comedy movie, at least you'll be able to think and move in the morning! Posted by: Stephany at December 18, 2009 04:31 PMCan someone please explain this to me? I was never very good at biology. According to the label, Seroquel acts as an antagonist at serotonin and dopamine receptors. I don't understand why you would use a serotonin receptor antagonist in conjunction with a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Wouldn't the two actions sort of cancel each other out? Posted by: Sarah at December 19, 2009 11:02 AMOh, sorry! i could've googled it BEFORE asking here. Well, but i'll appreciate an explanation anyway (I need all the help i can get!). Posted by: Sarah at December 19, 2009 11:12 AMFor those that are not long time seroquel users-seroquel is sleep inducing in smaller doses but in higher does can be VERY activating. For me anything up to 75 mgs will put me to sleep. Anything after and I'm wanting to clean the refrigerator with a toothbrush. So yeah I know people that snort it. Posted by: Lili at December 19, 2009 01:25 PMInteresting, I'd never heard it was activating at the higher doses. I know it's less sedating, but I'd never heard it was activating. Posted by: kimbriel at December 19, 2009 04:16 PMI think "antagonist" and "reuptake inhibitor" are the same thing? both hold back the flow-through of neurotransmitters, meaning it intensifies their effect because they linger longer in the brain. (I probably don't know what I'm talking about). I too found that Seroquel (which I was prescribed O/L for insomnia) knocked me out at a lower dose and revved me up at a higher one. Who knows how these things really work. Not the medical community! Posted by: Miranda at December 20, 2009 08:15 AMsaw the tv ad for the first time last night. pretty sad. Posted by: Elizabeth at December 20, 2009 01:03 PMMe too. Just saw it yesterday over at the parents' house. The part that gets me is the spoken and written warnings, e.g. spoken: "Seroquel can cause _____ in young people..." displayed on-screen: Seroquel is not approved for use in young people... [paraphrasing] spoken: "Seroquel can cause _____ in elderly people with dementia..." displayed on-screen: Seroquel is not approved for the treatment of dementia in elderly people... (Sorry for the bad paraphrasing, i only saw the commercial twice.) WHY do they have to warn people about the potential dangers of off-label use?? That's the part that gets me, that they seem to be promoting off-label use. Why not wait for it to get approved before they start advertising for said uses? What's the big freaking hurry? Strikes me as very unethical. (Rhetorical question; i do know what the big freaking hurry is.) By the way, i still don't have a good handle on the antagonist + reuptake inhibitor thing, so would super appreciate an explanation. (Waiting for response from biomedical engineering postdoc acquaintance.) Posted by: Sarah at December 26, 2009 02:45 PMToday is the 2nd and the seroquel commercials are now running on KCOP (Fox) Posted by: Lili at January 2, 2010 10:33 PMToday is the 5th and they are running (in the afternoon) on the USA network channel. Posted by: Lili at January 5, 2010 01:43 PMThree strikes and out. Insomnia was causing me to watch Lifetime and guess what I saw? Yep the lovely seroquel ad. Let's just go ahead and say as far as Southern California and the SF Bay is concerned-we are completely saturated. Posted by: Lili at January 6, 2010 09:55 AMPost a comment
