Cymbalta Gets FDA Approval For Anxiety Maintenance Treatment

Eli Lilly today announced that the FDA has approved its anti-depressant Cymbalta as a maintenance treatment for generalized anxiety disorder. That marks the sixth indication for the multi-billion selling drug, which is also approved for use in depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathic pain.

Recent Cymbalta comment from the WebMD site:

I have watched this drug completely destroy my husband. He was initially put on it for depression, anxiety and chronic back pain. It made him lathargic, and the pain increased and spread toother parts of his body. Now that we are trying to wan him off, the withdrawals are horrible! The suffering this man has had to endure is inhumane at the least. I don't believe the doctors were properly educated on this terrible drug so in turn patients aren't able to make a clear educated decision as to take this medication to begin with. I have placed a complaint with th FDA as well as with Eli Lilly. I have also placed a complaint with his doctor. I am so angry and to know that the weaning process will takes months is just unacceptable to me. Get online and type in Cymbalta withdrawal and Cymbalta side efffects and see the other hundreds of people who are suffering with little to no help from the medical field. Also, you will see the desperate attempts of some who are trying to get off this drug. There WILL be a death as a result of some of these tactics and I forsee a class action law suit in he future for Eli Lilly and any of the medical professionals who refuse to hear the cries of so many desperate people.

BTW, Cymbalta was prescribed for anxiety.

There have been many deaths already.

All doctors have to downplay the withdrawal is to tell the patient his/her original condition is worsening and "how about we add on some abilify? A lot of people get some relief with it."

Congratulations Eli-Lilly!
You are doing a good job to sell this drug.
What are you all going to do with all this money? Seriously! I am asking this to the few that profit. Do you have time to enjoy life?
I don't think so.
Too much work to promote poison even to children.

Last Friday I went to the hospice in front of my house and I told the psychiatrist I will have to see for the rest of my life because I will have to take all the drugs I take because I have spend two years in hell taking one of them, Effexor - wow! at least I will not give money to the drug that killed Tracy Johnson - and after three months off the drug I had to go back do to severe withdrawal symptoms that made living impossible.
YES! It is an anecdotal evidence but THAT IS THE TRUTH!
If FDA did the 4th phase of clinical trials that includes surveillance post-market anecdotal evidence would be taken as it is - a valuable, legal and trustful source of information that would have the power to take a drug from the market.
Just like Vioxx: it was based on relatives reports of their dear one's death that it was possible to know about the connection VIOXX+HEART ATTACK.
Of course they only started paying attention after having to pay money for the families of the victims.
Only money counts here.

Well... the psychiatrist... I told him that US government is recruiting children from 7 to 17 years-old to take Cymbalta.
For the first time I got some reaction:
he stared at me as if it was not possible.
Even started to shake his head but put himself together in time.

He is a researcher too not only a psychiatrist.

You all belong to jail.

Sorry for being so rude.
I hate writing like this. But what the hell? I feel like cursing.
So it's okay this way.
I only said that

They belong to jail.

Scott - your comment made me laugh out loud, because it's so true. And then I realized it wasn't laughter I was feeling, it was sadness.

I swear to god, we're rapidly approaching the day when all patients, regardless of diagnosis, will be given a combination of Cymbalta, Abilify, and Seroquel. And to think I spent eight years in med school and residency to learn that.

Freud, Jung, Bleuler, Kraepelin, Erickson, and the rest of them must be rolling over in their graves.

It really has gotten to the point where an FDA stamp of approval means absolutely nothing. You would actually be better off going down to the local five and dime store and purchasing your own rubber stamp at this juncture.

The FDA is not in the business of protecting America from dangerous drugs or products.

The FDA is in the Business of pleasing those who pay them their fees. If your a pharmaceutical corporation wanting to make huge dollars; an FDA approval stamp is just simple fat $check$ box to be marked off on the way to a lucrative marketing campaign.

I'm sure there are other government entities as deeply corrupt as the FDA; But none have the direct negative effect on the public health as the FDA has demonstrated time and time again in recent history.

Now that is the Dangerous "CHANGE" every American can rely upon from every political administration of either major party.

The FDA supports the business model "there is no "MONEY" in healthy people" 100%.

This is a horrible medication that may temporarily help anxiety and depression but the withdrawals are cruel and not worth it! I took the medication for two years and overcame my depression so I decided to come off of it. I felt so sick, nervous, nausea, scared and just miserable for almost a month. I was successful but almost went back on it because the withdrawal was so bad. I've never experienced anything like this and will be too scared to ever take anything ever again, even if it is recommended. They heavily advertise cymbalta on TV and that makes me so angry! It is a terrible drug!
