November 12, 2009Child Psychiatrists Behaving Badly With ChildrenThe Maryland Board of Physicians has suspended the license of Miguel Frontera, a Towson, Maryland psychiatrist, for alleged improper conduct with five boys in his care. The boys were being seen for ADHD. "Allegations from each of the boys, ages 10 to 12 at the time they were patients, were similar and all involved improper conduct during physical exams in his office that the doctor himself called 'not, you know, necessary' and 'very out of the mainstream of psychiatry,' according to the suspension order issued by the Maryland Board of Physicians. Why this idiot isn't being charged criminally is beyond me, but one hopes the Board takes away his license permanently at a later hearing. This kind of behavior is so unacceptable that it's difficult to imagine a grown man, much less an MD, engaging in it. Besides, who's ever heard of a psychiatrist conducting a physical exam? Meanwhile, up in Quebec, the well-knwon and controversial psychiatrist Pierre Mailloux has had his practice limited to adults only by the Quebec College of Physicians after being found guilty or partly guilty of 13 charges of either mis-diagnosing young patients or of over-prescribing drugs to them. And in September the Quebec College of Physicians found that he had breached profession ethics by talking trash about black and aboriginals in the media. The doctor's Wikipedia entry has more fascinating details about his career and many controversies. Thanks to the readers who made me aware of these cases. The Quebec College of Physicians are just like any other gang of French bureaucrats...they produce long process at huge expense and then act from political bias. If they don't like Dr Mailloux and the controversial things he says they should refute them but instead they just try to gag him. I practice consult psychiatry. I get asked to see pts with all kinds of medical and neurological problems who have changes in mental status. I cannot comment on this guy and what he did but I do physical exams all the time. Just this week I was asked to see a lady who was "psychotic". On exam she was found to have ataxia and language impairment. I ordered an MRI and she had a brain stem infarct that was missed. This guy may have been doing a basic cardiac exam which would be appropriate if he was giving them stimulants. If giving them stimulants was appropriate...well that is another matter! Who do you think is molesting one quarter of our US girls before the age of 18? And we have no idea how many boys because we haven't bothered to even study that issue yet. This doesn't surprise me in the least. The only surprise is that the guy finally got caught. And why no criminal charges? Look at the power disparity, plus the victims are "mentally ill." Posted by: Sherry at November 12, 2009 05:30 AMWilliam Ayres is a famous, similar case. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/08/10/BAEF196GU5.DTL He's the former president of the American Academy of Adolescent and Child Psychiatry, and he is also accused of improper physical examinations. From another news article: "Ayres and prosecutor Melissa McKowan sparred for hours over the issue, with Ayres adamantly maintaining that physical exams, including genital examinations, were necessary and useful. McKowan pointed out studies and documents suggesting that child psychiatrists ought to leave physicals to pediatricians to avoid complications. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/07/10/MNIM18LUUJ.DTL I think it's awfully creepy to have psychiatrists examining children's genitalia, especially when they are alone with the children and no nurses or parents are present. That is a huge red flag that something is wrong. Posted by: A at November 12, 2009 06:52 AMbpmum, I'm not sure why you're specifying French bureaucrats here. Posted by: Francesca Allan at November 12, 2009 09:42 AMWhen I did hospital psychiatry I and my staff psychiatrits performed physical exams on all our new patients. We often caught things that their internists had missed perhaps because they rarely got medical care; things like loss of vision in 1/4 of the visual field, or a strangulated umbilical hernia. Psychiatrists are doctors and doctors are supposed to do physical exams that are appropriate to the patient's condition. So don't get carried away just because some whacko abuses patients. Psychiatrists aren't the only doctors who have molested patients. I always think it's odd that physicians put MD of PhD after their names. This Miguel Frontera MD belongs to jail. It's not that difficult to have both these titles and it doesn't add any kind of knowledge about their practices." ---ANA - I don't understand your point. But what I do understand is that there is a world of difference in training between a PhD psychologist and an MD psychiatrist. Post a note if you want me to note briefly here. Essentially, MDs are clinicians: they are trained to diagnose and to treat. This includes psychiatrists. PhD I suspect quite a few of them could be charged with fraud. I got my medical records from one hospital and supposedly the resident did a complete physical exam. She never touched me, but somehow knew my heart was sinus rhythm, my lungs were clear, etc. She was magic. Posted by: Lisa at November 14, 2009 02:20 PMThe area I grew up in was not very large and I knew of two psychiatrists who were on probation with the medical board for sexual misconduct with patients. I looked it up on the medical board's website. They both still had hospital privileges even while they were under the board orders. It doesn't just happen in psychiatry, but it seems to happen more often in that area of medicine. Maybe part of it has to do with their believing they'll get by with it. After all, who is going to believe the crazy patients? Most of the time they probably do get by with it. Posted by: Lisa at November 14, 2009 02:42 PMThere is no excuse for what he did--the exams were unnecessary and led to no practical information. Prescriptions were not changed as a result. This man examined every young boy he had as a patient. I can't believe I fell for his gobbledy-gook explanation of why it was necessary and allowed him to examine my child. While I questioned it at first, he launched into a highly technical explanation and being naive, I said ok. My son is quite traumatized over this. Frontera actually told a friend of mine that her son had entered puberty "45 minutes ago!" Frontera was also careless with stimulant prescriptions. We are considering trying to get criminal charges against him, or a civil suit. The hearing is today--I hope they revoke his license. Posted by: EMC at November 18, 2009 07:23 AMDr. Frontera is a very good and caring doctor. If you read the posts, there are reasons for doing physical exams on patients. The man has not even had his evidentiary hearing yet, and is not being charged criminally. My son was also examined by Dr. Frontera. I remained in the room and nothing improper happened. I spoke to my son regarding his feelings about it, and he had no adverse feelings and he did not feel "molested" or taken advantage of. None of his private parats were touched. All my son wants to know is when he can see his doctor again. People have to stop making judgments and crucifying people before all of the evidence and explanations are on the table. I find it hard to believe that a man who is in the business of helping kids, would harm them, especially since we know sexual abuse has lifetime, adverse affects on its victims. I believe there is an explanation for this, and hope he will get his license back. Posted by: Helen at December 18, 2009 10:33 AMHelen - Why do I have trouble believing you? Child psychiatrists are NOT trained in their residency to give physicals to children. I am talking about their child psychiatry residency training. They don't teach it at Harvard or Yale or Stanford or anywhere else for that matter. For a psychiatrist to be touching a boy is just wrong. Pediatricians examine kids with a parent in the room. But you don't send a kid to a shrink to have their genitalia examined, period. If you need an exam in that area, send them to a pediatrician. Every child psychiatrist we've talked to about giving kids exams has laughed and said that it is just not done and that it would be very dangerous to do so. One shrink said that any shrink who says he was trained to do it is just using the tired old excuse used by pedophile child psychiatrists for years. Dr. Don Rife (arrested for pedophilia) and Dr. Ayres (arrested for pedophilia) have been conning people for decades with this nonsense. Posted by: Jack at December 29, 2009 01:05 PMWhen I was in the psych ward, I had one female shrink offer to give me a rectal exam. Not sure what that was about. I declined, and thankfully I wasn't forced to have one. No other shrink during any other hospitalization did that. I'm not sure what her deal was. Posted by: Tired at December 29, 2009 09:07 PMHelen - sorry, I am not buying that your son can't "wait to see" Dr.Frontera again. Given that Dr. William Ayres was arrested for identical molestation on boys in California, there's not a chance in hell that Frontera will ever ever get his license back. And now there's a movement among the public to open a criminal investigation into Frontera. As for you finding it hard to believe that a therapist would molest kids, please read up on the hundreds of news stories on other similar pedophile psychiatrists- Dr. Demasi; Dr William Ayres: Dr. Donald Lee Rife, Dr. Walter Presnell...to name a few. All of these shrinks - all with Ivy League training, molested young boys. As one top child psychiatrist has written, pedophiles will gravitate to any profession that gives easy access to lots of children. And he said, that includes child psychiatry. Posted by: Alison at December 31, 2009 11:01 AMHelen - the reason Frontera did not molest your son was because you were in the room with him. But there's no reason on earth for a shrink to be giving genital exams to kids. And did Frontera ever examine girls? Don't think so. This case is going into the hands of the DA's office.
