A Major isn't all that senior given that medics come in as Captains. He was just recently promoted as well. Perhaps the two taken in custody will shed some light on this horrific act.

Philip Dawdy responds: just to clarify, by media i asume you mean doctors. yes they start as captains in army/air force/marines and as lt's in the navy. medics would be like combat medics and they come in with non-commissioned titles such as corp and petty officer (navy). if i remember it all right.

Can we(as a country and government officially) finally admit and acknowledge that there are really problems going on Iraq with the conditions our troops are being subject to and not just by the so called enemy? Here was a person who knew there was help and medications, yet still went with other options.

For an an "all voluntary" military why are people being forced again.....

I would assume we will learn a lot more about this man, and his motives as this investigation moves forth.

Why is it that if someone who has a history of seeing a psychiatrist commits an act of violence the story is psychiatric patient kills, whereas if a psychiatrist massacres people it's in poor taste for the headline to read, "Psychiatrist kills 12 and injures 31?"

It is weird but no one in the media is asking what meds the psychiatrist was taking. Almost everyone knows that they take antidepressants in droves. They especially take antidepressants when they find out they will be deployed to Iraq or some other bad news.

The fact that he is still alive means there is a very remote chance we might find out which SSRI or SNRI antidepressant he was taking [perhaps with an Abilify or Seroquel to "kick in" against the depression]. A defense attorney would be interested in knowing this [what with antidepressants saying right on the insert that they can cause mania and psychosis]. But since this will be a military trial the chances are much slimmer that a defense attorney will be heard on this issue.

If it had been a murder-suicide, like VA Tech, we would never get the autospy or toxicology report released - such as did happen at VA Tech.

Thanks, yes by medic I did mean doctor. I have a terrible, incorrigible tendency to mismatch my lexicons - a geographic hazard...

In the US, medics are also known as corpsman in the Navy/Marine Corps - not sure about Army/Air force.

I guess my poorly worded comment was to suggest a medical Major is not an experienced line officer compared with his or her peers.

From the somewhat limited and disturbing information coming out through varied media sources at this juncture; I can only surmise/guess this has much more to do with a Geo-political and religious agenda; than it has to do with any psychotropic medications or psychiatry.

Of course as with all saddening tragedies of this nature; time and in-depth investigation will give us a better grasp of the true intent and circumstances leading up to these abhorrent actions.

It is so heartbreaking about our soldiers - more have committed suicide than were killed in combat since 2008. 40% of these suicides were on antidepressants. It is all posted on www.SSRIStories.com

Soldiers' families await hearing

SHERMAN - Tears come to Elizabeth Russell's eyes when she thinks of the five American soldiers her son is accused of gunning down in a moment of rage in Iraq.

She prays for them: the Navy officer, the Army psychiatrist, and three enlisted men, and their widows, parents and children.

She also prays for her son, Army Sgt. John Russell, who faces five counts of premeditated murder for what happened May 11 at a combat stress center near Baghdad.

Russell, 44, is in custody in Kuwait, awaiting an Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of a preliminary hearing. Under military law, a conviction can carry a death sentence; the minimum is life in prison.

In more than seven years of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, there have been cases of alleged attacks among U.S. troops, but never one in which a soldier stands accused of killing five colleagues.

I doubt this horrific rampage has anything to do with political agendas, Muslims -- or any religion for that matter. But the media will play up this angle and nullify any news on what meds the psychiatrist/perp was taking.

Always remember that we no longer have a free press. Pharma has owned the media since 1997 when advertising of prescription medications was first allowed. Now the newspapers, already in trouble for other reasons, have no option but to try and stay alive with their advertising, most of which is for prescription drugs.

There are those that may call this mental illness; After all, it is a crazy, polarized, and violent world in which we live.

My opinion (running the risk of not being politically correct) would be to call this something else entirely.

I don't call this 'politically correct' at all.

I call this a very probable case of another SSRI antidepressant murder.
