More Paxil Birth Defects Case Documents Available

Bob Fiddaman of Seroxat (Paxil) Sufferers had done a fine job of getting his hands on various transcripts and depositions from the recently-completed Paxil birth defects case in Pennsylvania. He's now got up the deposition of Jane Nieman, a former GlaxoSmithKline employee. Go to his site to download the document.

Although there have been a few smallish articles in the US press, news of the $2.5 million jury award sure hasn't shown up in the New York Times, Washington Post or LA Times. That's kind of weird, especially in light of the fact that GSK faces about another 600 birth defects lawsuits and also because it's very uncommon for a pharma company to lose a case involving an anti-depressant.

GSK has announced that it will appeal the verdict. I look forward to seeing what legal argument the company's attorneys try to advance to undo the ruling.

You have heard the term 'getting blood from a stone'

Read the testimony - Jeez - the lawyer does a fine job with Nieman who, like so many GSK employees before her, beat around the bush with semantics!

This is monstrous of them.
They knew and they knew it! Still the drug is on the market and they say there is no evidence.
Murderers and criminals that's what all those involved in this mafia are.
One more time?
You all belong to jail.

How could these women think taking antidepressants during pregnancy is a reasonable idea? I blame their psychiatrists primarily but, come on, ... how about a little critical thinking on the part of the patients?

If the packaging warned of harming the foetus then you would have a valid point Francesca. Fact is, it didn't. Despite GlaxoSmithKline knowing!

I don't care what the packaging said. Taking unnecessary drugs during pregnancy is a stupid idea.

How about "Nah, nah-ne-nah-nah, you can't prove the drug caused it... Nah, nah-ne-nah-nah, the President's in our pocket; so fuck you"? This isn't generally regarded as sound legal argument, as far as I'm aware, but appears to be all they've got.

I have to agree with Francesca. My pdoc told me Lamictal was safe during pregnancy and I still told him if I were pregnant I would never take it. (Come to find out, it's not exactly safe during pregnancy, but that's for another post)

No drug should be administered to a pregnant woman unless it is absolutely life or death necessary. And no, "feeling shitty" doesn't count.

These women have more responsibility than that.

Francesca,

If she was already taking Paxil when she got pregnant she would have to go thru withdrawal symptoms the whole pregnancy.
We were all prescribed these drugs having faith on our psychiatrists and could never imagine that it would do us all it did and still do.
If today I got pregnant and my doctor prescribed me Paxil claiming that it would help me to the mood swings that a pregnancy causes perhaps I would take if I was not already aware of it's harms.
Whenever I start talking about the antidepressants side effects and all we know here people don't have a clue about what is really going on and worse: don't wanna hear about it.
And it is like that in US too.
I'm not understanding why you are not aware that people are not aware.
Sounds strange to me.
