September 14, 2009Lilly Sponsors Fibromyalgia WebsiteA new website, knowfibro.com, has popped up and interestingly its open and transparent about its sponsorship by Eli Lilly and the National Fibromyalgia Association, a California-based non-profit. NFA is in turn partially funded by Lilly, Forest Labs and other pharma companies. NFA claims that upwards of 10 million Americans suffer from the chronic pain condition, although fibromyalgia is controversial among some doctors who claim it doesn't exist. (I've got no opinion on that point.) So fibro sure could be big business for Big Pharma. Lilly's anti-depressant Cymbalta is approved in the US for fibromyalgia treatment, although it was rejected for that indication by European regulators. Whatever anyone makes of fibro and whether anti-depressants do much to address it, it sure is interesting to see a pharma company being upfront about its astroturfing. in AD withdrawal circles...forums online that help people withdraw from these drugs many people attribute the cause of what they call fibro to the ADs themselves. It certainly rings true if you spend time listening to their stories... so here we go watching a drug be used to treat a condition it can also cause or trigger... no surprise but still disgusting. Posted by: mjane at September 14, 2009 12:45 PMI know people with fibro and it's real. I know the CDC recognizes chronic fatigue syndrome as legit, and fibro and CF often go together. My one friend with fibro says antidepressants do not help her; powerful pain meds do. Apparently it's a rather individualized disorder and has some kind of autoimmunity component.
