July 27, 2009Lawmakers Seek To Limit TV Drug AdsAfter 12 years of DTC advertising of prescription drugs on TV and elsewhere, several members of Congress are proposing limits on TV ads. One wants to ban erectile dysfunction drug ads during prime time, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) wants to ban DTC advertising of new drugs until they've been in the marketplace for some time, while another Congressman wants to stop drug companies from deducting the cost of DTC advertising on their taxes. All very interesting and all likely to go nowhere, given the epic power of pharma in Congress and the interests of the mainstream media, which makes billions a year off the ads. Nonetheless, it is interesting to see some lawmakers pushing back against pharma. Posted by Philip Dawdy at July 27, 2009 10:55 AM

it's all part of the conspiracy... shrinks, media, pharma, congress, your neighbors, the Russians... Did I forget anyone? Philip Dawdy responds: oh you are so very cute. Posted by: grassleyrocks at July 27, 2009 02:32 PMYou forgot Fox News. The other was about preventing headaches for the future. Later they showed another research of a geneticist who claims that laziness is genetic and they will create a pill for those who had the misfortune of having it at their genes... I will have to go now because they are talking about obesity and how America will fight this disease... Bye... I'm imagining a child in the morning taking at least 5 pills in the breakfast. They also said that Queen Elizabeth is fearing swine flu because it's possible that two of the employees have caught the flu. She will go on a trip and will take Tamiflu in her purse. Philip,
It's interesting to note that you can't see a Marlboro add on television and smoking is always a chosen and consentual act, but somehow ads for pharmaceuticals are boundless and the act of taking them ranges from chosen and consentual, to coerced and forced. Psych drugs, even if you assume all use is voluntary like smoking, are clearly not without risk. Posted by: Aaron B at July 28, 2009 07:30 AMPost a comment
