May 01, 2009My Back Demands Equal TimeIt's been a slow news week on the mental health front, which is good for me since my back was acting oddly the last few days, so I used the opportunity to not sit in front of my computer for hours on end. If my back holds up, I'll be back with posts later today. And in case you hadn't heard, Botox got an FDA-mandated black box warning yesterday. Posted by Philip Dawdy at May 1, 2009 12:01 AM

feel better soon... Posted by: Gianna at May 1, 2009 06:57 AMwhat i find surprising is that it's being used to treat children with cerebral palsy (as well as adults)from reading the FDA warning page, it definitely needed a black box warning--looks like for a solid year these reports have been coming in--could be a year too long for some people before the FDA put that black box warning up. "FDA has received reports of systemic adverse reactions including respiratory compromise and death following the use of botulinum toxins types A and B for both FDA-approved and unapproved uses. The reactions reported are suggestive of botulism, which occurs when botulinum toxin spreads in the body beyond the site where it was injected. The most serious cases had outcomes that included hospitalization and death, and occurred mostly in children treated for cerebral palsy-associated limb spasticity. Use of botulinum toxins for treatment of limb spasticity (severe arm and leg muscle spasms) in children or adults is not an approved use in the U.S." http://www.fda.gov/CDER/drug/early_comm/botulinium_toxins.htm Posted by: Stephany at May 1, 2009 09:21 AMI forgot to add that the treatment for muscle spasms in children for cerebral palsy using botox is NOT approved for use in the US by the FDA. Kids have died as a result of botox treatment. Posted by: Stephany at May 1, 2009 09:24 AMHope you feel better soon. Posted by: WomanofHope at May 1, 2009 12:04 PMYeah, take care of Mr. Back. Not to boast or anything, but I'm at a yoga retreat center in the Berkshires for a Julia Cameron weekend. I paid the equivalent of almost five weeks' salary to come here (I must have been in some sort of fugue state) so I intend to suck the marrow out of the experience. The building is on top of a large hill overlooking a lake and the Berkshires. My top bunk faces the lake view. Yowzah! I'm off to the sauna. Wow, I'm really excited now that I'm here. It's wonderfully pleasant. Best wishes to all and yes, I really do wish Philip could be here. Although he'd need to be using the men's whirlpool and sauna. Sherry (hoping no one minds my little travel report) Posted by: Sherry at May 1, 2009 02:27 PMhey it's 72 and sunny! Posted by: Stephany at May 1, 2009 02:51 PMthanks for the travel report Sherry, but a top bunk!? you're brave lol Posted by: Stephany at May 1, 2009 09:11 PMMaybe you need some Botox for the muscles in your back ha ha. Not funny?. I prescribe some time outdoors for fresh spring air ,time under the sun (with sunblock or shade) and to listen to nature of birds and such. Repeat until back no longer painful. Posted by: mark p.s.2 at May 2, 2009 03:08 AMIn Seattle? Amazing. It must be glorious. I was thinking of Philip and Stephany yesterday on the way down. Borders sells Seattle's Best coffee and they have a big picture of the Pike's Place Market sign. I adore that place, bronze pig, flying fish and all. I loved Seattle. We stayed at the Green Tortoise. One of my dreams is to ride the Green Tortoise bus across the country. Have a great day everyone. Philip, be nice to Mr. Back. Give him whatever he needs. Philip, Hope you are feline better soon. Backs are the worst. Posted by: susan at May 2, 2009 06:47 PMI hope you are healed by now. Did you know that antipsychotics have been shown to be effective in managing acute and chronic pain? I just had to inject that, too good to pass up. :) Unfortunately this is an actual direction some pharmas are looking at.
