Merck Creates Fake Academic Medical Journal

There is very little about Big Pharma's manipulative, lies-as-marketing behavior that shocks me anymore, but this time out I am astounded: Merck has gone and created a fake academic journal, Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine, according to The Scientist. Merck products such as Fosamax were featured in "studies" in the journal, which is reportedly published by Elsevier, a well-known academic journal publishing house. Both it and Merck have got a lot of explaining to do.

From the bioethics.net blog:

"The Scientist has reported that, yes, it's true, Merck cooked up a phony, but real sounding, peer reviewed journal and published favorably looking data for its products in them. Merck paid Elsevier to publish such a tome, which neither appears in MEDLINE or has a website, according to The Scientist.

"What's wrong with this is so obvious it doesn't have to be argued for. What's sad is that I'm sure many a primary care physician was given literature from Merck that said, 'As published in Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine, Fosamax outperforms all other medications....' Said doctor, or even the average researcher wouldn't know that the journal is bogus. In fact, knowing that the journal is published by Elsevier gives it credibility!"

The attitude of pharma companies that they can get away with whatever the hell they want whenever they want and that they can deeply manipulate doctors and patients through various smoke-and-mirror techniques has simply got to stop. It's dangerous.

I hope someone in Congress asks Merck some tough questions.

Drug Injury Watch has more details on how this all came to light.

That these "physician" researchers haven't founded a journal paper archive like arXiv.org is telling.

arXiv is all about presenting results directly to other researchers, typically at least a year before journal publication, if not more. It's mathematicians, physics experts and other technical ephemera there. And pure honesty.

The medical community, in contrast, is all about prestige publishing and spin . Shameful is the only word to describe these clowns.

That's a brand new low for Big Pharma. What's next? Advertising in kids' comic books?

You know all this shit and all the rest of the fuct up shit that goes on in our institutions, medical, financial, legal, education, religious etc etc...NONE of it is going to change in so long as everyone keeps wasting their time watching american idol and idioticaly thinking their life is just fine and dandy, even blessed, because they can afford their frapaccino every morning, buy their brand name clothes (and false identity), and have all these "things", frivilous material possesions and access to the latest and greatest forms of mind anesthasizing entertainment.

People are too "distracted" with the easy outs that the tv feeds to their brains thru light and sound waves (you might as well be nodding out on herion for the average 4 to 5 hours a day people spend watching tv for all the good that watching 90% of what people watch on tv does), and they are too consumed and obsessed with the easy pre-defined pretty packaged manipulative bullshit petty consumerist idenetities that are fed to them true the boobtube to even consider or fathom the idea of having interests and ideas of their own... maybe reading a book, maybe getting enough info about ANY of the MANY issues out there to become outraged, maybe instead of watching tv for four hours after we get home from work each night (and how about rioting in the streets for a raise in the minimum wage so we can work less hours and afford to buy health insurance four ourselves since most people aren't even offered full time employement in the 1st place in order to keep them from qualifying for health insurance thru their employers, and so we can have more time and enough energy to have interests and do anything more than sit in front of the tv being lead like cattle towards mediocracy)... how about we all instead of watching tv we spend those 4 hours a day online learning about an issue that is important to us and then ORGANIZING or joining existing organization that's purpose is to enact the changes that need to be made to make this world a better less corrupt place.

I promise if you spend your time doing that instead of watching tv and all its manipulative advertising, that you will suddenly find yourself spending less money on bs "lifestyle" material possesions you now use to fill the void in your heart and soul caused by living in a world designed to suck you dry, overstimulate, confuse, manipulate and entertain you into accepting a PATHETIC sense of self based upon material posessions. And suddenly you will find that you now actually have a true feeling of self and purpose, maybe even much of your depression is lifted and you're saving money and making new friends as well as expanding your knowledge base, finding a new PASSION in life, and the most important part: YOU WILL NOW BE DOING SOMETHING TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER LESS CORRUPT AND HEALTHIER PLACE instead of just sitting by using a television set to numb your brain and remove all your concerns and passions for sociial justice from your mind, just like some junkie who uses drugs to remove themselves from conciousness about their personal issues in life, you, I and most of the population use television to remove ourselves from being concious of the problems we have with the less personal but much bigger and probably more important social problems and corruptions in our institutions.

The only way we are going to make ANY progress in mental health reform, ending the corruption amongst big Phrma or making changes in ANY other institution is if WE ALL, no matter what our interests may be, no matter what our individual pet peeves may be with this or that institution, if we ALL turn off the goddamn tv, turn on our computers, use the POWER of the internet and our own ability to be somewhat cynical and willing to verify our sources and the accuracy of the information we read, start reading books again and REJECT the mass medias news outlets and turn to other online blogger investigative reporters, and seek out and find LIKE MINDED individuals with whom we can organize, start forums, and start interacting with and synchronizing our "in common" activities and goals with other like minded organizations until EVERYONE, every single person in this country and on this planet capable of thinking in any reasonable manner about ethical issues and issues of human quality of life, smart use of technology and safe use of medication etc... until EVERYONE spends AT LEAST one hour a day becoming involved with and helping the causes of ANY grassroots organization of their choosing that is dedicated to preserving the quality of human life, the integrity of our institutions, and any other life improving pursuit of liberty and justice for all.

Until that day comes, the day when all the surveys and census show that most people spend at least one hour a day being involved in activism, well until that day all we are accomplishing is every now and then coming to a website that is concerned with the issues we are concerned with ourselves, and pissing and moaning while being unwilling to put aside our concern about what is happening on this episode of Ophra for long enough to do anything that is ACTUALLY USEFUl and productive, cause spending 20 minutes a week bitching and moaning is just you paying lipservice when the truth is that you really don't care, you just want to think you care.

Now Im not saying that the readers of tis site have this problem, an my use of the word "you" was not meant to direct an insult or make an insult, it is just how I write. The point I am trying to make here is that nothing is going to change and we all need to stop expecting others or the authorities or the politicians etc to change things for us and get out from in front of the tv passively being fed BS and start actually doing something, even if that is just something like taking 30 minutes a day to read a site like FS and then another 30 minutes to check out links and the doccuments behind philips articles that he posts, then the next day exploring more links etc etc until one day you feel you've gathered enough information and educated youself enough that you feel you can now start getting involved in some grassroots or other organization and start donating your time and expertise to further projects and make progress to actually get some changes made.

It ought to be a mandatory requirement of all US citizens to be involved in some sort of grassroots movement or do volunteer work. Maybe if we ever get universal healthcare they can make this a requirement to receive it, unless of course you are unable due to total dissability or working over 40 hours a week, otherwise asking people to give two hours a month to volunteer doesn't seem like too much to ask.

I dunno, all I do know is that TV, the brainwashing box takes up too much of peoples time and other forms of information gathering and plenty of other activities would all serve us much better than the time we all spend watching the box

What will the FDA do? Nothing. After all, government is sold out to the highest corporate bidder. When the gov't needs illegal wire-taps, Verizon allows them secret rooms to listen in on calls. When Haliburton (and KBR) need more revenue, the gov't hands out no-bid contracts. When the gov't dislikes literature, Amazon, Wikipedia and Facebook ban the book "America Deceived". The corporations own our government, not the people.

For some notes on the researchers who willingly participated in this fakery, see Scientific-Misconduct's "The fake editorial board of Merck's fake bone journal".
