Late Today

I was out at a book reading last evening and got home much later than I'd thought I would. As a result, posts will be late today, so see you then.

Dish on the book! Worth a read?

Last night on 90210, they were doing a storyline where one of the main characters, Silver, plays a teenager who has bipolar disorder. It was a great storyline, but the response from the fans online is really nasty. At the beginning of the series, before the character was bipolar, all the fans praised Silver, are now saying all these horrible things. All these comments like "Someone needs to get her in a straightjacket and put her on some pills" and "Silver needs medication-ASAP" and "Get that psycho on some meds!" all over the message boards, people are making extremely rude comments about how Silver's crazy, Silver needs medication and they don't like Silver anymore because she's a "psycho" It's really rude. All these people think they are being "funny" and "cool" by making their comments, but if someone made a rascist comment about a character they'd be all offended, saying rascism is bad. How come it;'s perfectly alright to say mean things about a character because they have mental health issues, but is it's a comment abotu race or religion it's not okay It's totally awful that fans are saying such horrible things about a character because they aren't normal anymore and now have a mental disorder and they say that the character is now "unrelatable" and "irredeemable" because they aren't normal. The fans' comments on the message boards about how they want to put Silver on pills and in a straight jacket and on meds is extremely rude and these people have no idea how what they are saying is just as bad as saying a rascist remark or a negative remark about a religion. It"s not fair that it's accetable to say horrible things about characters with mental health issues, but everything else is not acceptable. Everyone is saying how Silver's character is "ruined" now. I love teen dramas and 90210 is great and it's great to have a storyline about a teenager with mental health issues, if only the fans were able to have responses that were insulting the character because it's not just the character they are insulting- they are insulting anyone with mental health issues. You might want to checkout the past 90210 episodes, they have been building up this storyline for awhile. The original 90210 had David have bipolar disorder and the new 90210 has Silver as a teenager having bipolar disorder. I'm a huge 90210 fan and thought you all might want to know. Bye. Needed to post this somewhere.

From what I observe, any slang, idiom, or direct reference to mental illness or related topics is okay - especially because it is not PC to make ANY reference about any other disability, race, religion, ethnicity ....you name it. Manys the time I've railed politely or otherwise against the use of words like nutcase, fruitcake, loony, ad nauseum, and people pay attention for roughly a minute at that.

No energy to make it my cause. And a reflection of supreme ignorance brought to you by the principal players - pharm, its accolytes, docs, the govt., etc. Plus the fact that it is not something that is really understood...not that cancer is understood, or autism, but there are thousands of people out there with pink ribbons racing for the cure and destygmatizing it.
