Vote For This Blog

So the polls opened yesterday in Medgadget's annual Medical Weblog Awards. This is the fifth year of the awards which are based strictly upon vote totals. Furious Seasons is a finalist for Best Patient Weblog, as is Soulful Sepulcher, a blog I'm sure many of you already know. So vote for mine or Stephany's blog. Thanks.

A link to the list of finalists in all manner of categories is here. You can vote over the next couple of weeks and you can only vote once from a specific IP address.

While of course I hope you win a well deserved award of any kind, it kind of strikes me that you are in odd company in the "Patient Weblog" category. You are more of an investigative reporter who's managed to leave his "patient" moniker behind I would say.

Close to a half a million of those under the age of 18 have been prescribed atypical antipsychotic Risperdal alone. 15 percent of all atypicals are precribed for suspected bipolar disorder, yet is not recommended unless psychosis is a comorbid condition as well.

The number of those under the age of 18 treated for this suspected disease has increased close to 40 fold within a decade recently, and yet rarely is the onset of bipolar disorder presented before the age of 15.

Over-diagnosis occurs in children due perhaps to the copious amounts of medicinal treatment options now available.

Those children who are progressively prescribed psychotropics are often prescribed two or more of such drugs most of the time. This is frightening and dangerous.

SSRI makers do not publish one third of the clinical trials they conduct. This should be taken into consideration by health care providers.

Both my children "got" manic depression at the age of twenty. Both took lithium for years. I wish for black box warnings for ALL atypical antipsychotics for children under the age of eighteen and have this on my list of goals for this year, especially because the psychiatrists have scurried over to atypicals since the SSRIs got their black box warnings. First, we'll see who Obama picks as head of the FDA - and whether he fires some of the worst who are still there.

Sara, I nominated Furious Seasons for Best Patient and medical blog category; but it appears it was only placed in Best Patient's.

Posted by: Stephany at January 10, 2009 02:21 PM

And here is my nominating comment at MedGadget. Hopefully more readers will come to this site as a result, and learn like we all have from the articles.

"I nominate http://www.furiousseasons.com/ Furious Seasons for Best Patient's blog, and Medical blog. This blog has daily mental health news articles and is authored by an investigative journalist. Cutting edge news, and inside pharmaceutical information. This site also hosts "The Zyprexa Documents" --that are Lilly's hidden documents now public."

I voted. I am thrilled that both Stephany and Philip made it to the end, but over the moon that Gianna and I were considered even if we didn't make the cut. Gianna Rocks.
