Mostly Back

Today marks my attempt to return to normal after both the inauguration of President Barack Obama and my bout of back miseries. My back seems to be semi-cooperative, so we'll see where this winds up.

As for the new President, I simply cannot wait to see his proposals on health insurance. We'll see where that winds up, too.

I hope your back gets well soon. There is no quick fix for that. I agree with you regarding the healthcare. I just hope one day soon, those of us who obtain mental health care/therapy are treated with the respect we deserve!!!

One of a multitude of satisfying moments at the Inaugural was when Bush's helicopter took off and flew around the area. Almost the entire crowd sang "Na na na na, na na na na, yea yea yea, GOOD BYE!!" And we all waved. Plus, I don't know if you could hear it on TV but he got the loudest boos of all when introduced. Quickly, the band struck up a tune to drown us out. As the person ultimately responsible for the death of my son from Zyprexa, I too have some hope for the future now that he is outta here.

Go slowly Philip!

Sorrowful,
Thank you so much for the update! I watched on the Big Screen in a local theatre and no, we didn't hear the singing. We only heard a faint booing so the band did their job.

I trust you got back home safely and happily.

Physicians for a National Health Program (www.pnhp.org) is urging folks to write Obama opposing appointment of Dr. Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General:

"Among our concerns are these:

He has very little background in public health, preventive medicine or administration.

He has openly opposed progressive health reform, going so far as to cite false information to denigrate single payer (e.g. in his error-laden attack on Michael Moore's film "Sicko") and parroting the health insurance lobby's distortions of single payer.

As a media figure, he has been disturbingly cozy with Big Pharma. He co-hosts Turner Private Networks' monthly show "Accent Health," which airs in doctors' offices around the country and which serves as a major conduit for targeted ads from the drug companies. Another example: In 2003, despite mounting evidence to the contrary, he publicly downplayed concerns about the dangers of Vioxx. It was removed from the market a year later by its manufacturer, Merck.

In the 2008 election campaign, his reporting on John McCain's health proposals was misleading and implicitly positive, giving undeserved credence to McCain's claims that buying private health insurance on the open market is a financially viable option for most Americans.

We urge you to write to President-elect Obama and express your opposition to Gupta's possible nomination, and to urge Obama to nominate a more acceptable candidate for this critically important post. You can do so by clicking here: http://change.gov/page/s/healthcare.

Sincerely,
Quentin D. Young, M.D.
National Coordinator, PNHP"
