January 22, 2009Dog On Anti-Depressants Mauls Former French PresidentI'm not making this up: former French President Jacques Chirac was mauled by the family dog, which has been given anti-depressants. Said Chirac's wife: "The dog went for him for no apparent reason.... We were aware the animal was unpredictable and is being treated with pills for depression. My husband was bitten quite badly but he is certain to make a full recovery in weeks." Apparently, anti-depressants can work a whammy on dogs as well as humans. okay i am sorry he got bitten, but that is very funny. Posted by: Lilian Nattel at January 22, 2009 02:25 PMThe quote from Chirac's wife doesn't make clear if the dog was unpredictable before or after the pills. Maybe the dog was unpredictable to begin with, so they tried pills? Often (not always) when a dog is unpredictably aggressive, there has been some past abuse by the owners on the dog. Maybe Chirac got what he deserved?? Posted by: Tony at January 22, 2009 02:31 PMI've searched and it's suggested that the dog was already under antidepressant. Nothing like a little doggie Reconcile(Prozac)! grrr. Posted by: Stephany at January 22, 2009 07:28 PM"Research carried out for Sainsbury's Bank in Britain showed that 632,000 dogs and cats had suffered depression in 2002. Three times as many pets had suffered with behavioural problems that were linked with depression." Lilly is more than Zyprexa, they want our pets too. I am sorry for Chirac, and suspect he had to take his pants to the tailor. I wonder if this dog attack will be featured in the American DTC in the "risk section." As for information on drugs in France, a France2(late night, nationally funded investigative TV station) came over two summers ago, knowing that Lilly was about to make a big Zyprexa push there. They wanted to warn the public, and interviewed Alex Berenson, me, and someone from Lilly who misspoke. Of course it was in French but I got to watch myself. Have no idea how often such warnings appear in France. At least they are spared Abilify ads. Posted by: Sorrowful at January 23, 2009 10:56 AMI agree, Stephany. Next, they'll go after farm animals. Ever seen a depressed cow? Posted by: Sorrowful at January 23, 2009 10:59 AMActually the pharmaceutical companies have had the farm animals since the 1990s. This is one of the reasons why I eat organic. Animals are given antibiotics. There diet is so inadequate that most cows would die "naturally" if they weren't butchered first.
