Risperdal Causing Breast Development In Boys

As I noted two weeks ago, there are now solid reports of teen boys who developed breasts as a result of taking the atypical antipsychotic Risperdal. The WSJ Health blog reported on this last week as well:

"One particularly troubling side effect is the growth of breasts in some male patients taking Risperdal. Steve Sheller, a lawyer in Philadelphia, represents six teenage boys seeking compensation from J&J after they developed breasts while taking Risperdal. Sheller says their problems stem from prolactin, a hormone involved in lactation, that can be elevated in males and females who take the medicine. Two of the boys he represents required mastectomies to get rid of their bosoms.

"The company has denied in court papers that it is culpable for the plaintiffs’ injuries, has taken part in any 'misrepresentations, omissions, suppression or concealment' of negative information about possible side effects from the drug in their warnings to consumers."

I spoke with Sheller last week and he told me of some other side effects from Risperdal, one of which is such an explosive allegation that I'm going to wait for further evidence of its presence or for it to show up in a legal complaint before I write about it here. But, trust me, it will make your head spin.

I haven't the faintest as to when Sheller's clients were taking the drug or what J&J was describing as issues with the drug's use at the time.

The drug's package insert reports cases of gynecomastia--breast development in males--in 2.3 percent of kids and teens taking the drug (see page 9 of the insert). It's not clear me if this same phenomenon is present in adults, but the insert does note gynecomastia in some adults (see page 7 of the insert), or what the situation is with girls taking the drug.

What troubles me about all of this should perhaps be obvious: it isn't right, fair or appropriate to give boys a drug that can cause them to grow breasts. It's simply so against Nature and human development that I cannot even get into it. It's difficult to imagine the psychological trauma these boys must have experienced--and perhaps still are experiencing--in the name of treating ADHD, bipolar disorder or whatever else they were being given Risperdal for. If you assume that perhaps 500,000 male boys and teens are taking Risperdal--a number I'm using for illustration only--then you'd expect to see 11,500 boys developing breasts. That's a problem and as side effects percentages generally run even higher in the general population--as opposed to those in the clinical studies--it makes me wonder what the hell is going on out in America.

All in all, I see this issue with gynecomastia and prolactin levels and Risperdal as validating a lot of my concerns about giving antipsychotics to youngsters. One of my concerns is how these drugs can affect the physical and sexual organ development of youngsters.

If you think such concerns are excessive or misplaced (God knows, some people have dubbed me as a Scientologist and anti-psychaitrist for flagging these concerns), then consider this paper which identifies decreased bone density in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia who've taken antipsychotics long-term. A separate paper by the same researchers indicates that some women taking antipsychotics become hypogonadal, "a medical term for a defect of the reproductive system that results in lack of function of the gonads (ovaries or testes)."

Obviously there are differences in amount of medication taken and length of time on a medication, but if those kinds of mechanisms are at work in adults, then how could anyone possibly argue that they would not be a source of grave concern in kids and adults being given antipsychotics for non-psychotic disorders.

A I noted on this site recently, the best rule of thumb for approaching antipsychotic use is to not give them to kids for anything other than childhood schizophrenia and, perhaps, extreme autism. I'd argue that the same rule should be applied to adults, and I'm sure not very comfortable about the long-term use of these drugs in adult schizophrenia.

I am not sure who is labelling you as anti-pharma or a freak or whatever, but I just wanted to post a note saying that I think you are doing great things. I admire your efforts to promote safe and responsible prescriptions. I realize that doctors have to make a buck, but for goodness sake ... when are they going to start treating the patient instead of turning them all into guinea pigs???

(Side note: I have been lucky in that my doctor listens, but I have seen what happens when that isn't the case. It isn't pretty.)

Well, I used zyprexia and it made me grow breasts too. However, I think your eggagerating the problems it causes. A)They shrink after you stop taking the drug. B) It didn't cause me any truma whatsoever. Perhaps if they grew large enough to be noticable it would be a problem, but provided they've been warned about this, that would never happen. It would take far too long.

This is like frankenstein stuff.

Felix, how many men with major depression or insomnia would take a med with the risk of growing breasts assuming they were aware? Seems like something maybe doctors should mention? Maybe a few would still sign up, but I bet many would not.

When I was on Risperdal in eighth grade I went from an A or B cup to a D cup in a couple months. It made my breasts look really weird and saggy in middle school. I was very skinny so it looked like I had breast implants in middle school because I had a very tiny upper body. I am a skinny, small person who has a very tiny upper body and a very thin waist and having huge breasts on a tiny body really looked weird. Every picture of my with them made them really stand out. There was a picture of me at the beginning of eighth grade I had small breasts on a skinny body and it looked normal, then a picture at the end of eighth grade, I had huge breasts on a small body and it looked so weird like I had really weird breasts implants. It made my breasts looked fucked up in every picture. When I became anorexic, my breasts went back to normal size and they got back to being smaller.

I just came across this while reading of the breast development in these boys. It caught my attention on the news last night. 12 Years ago they gave these type meds to my brother and my nephew was joking how he grew boobs. We all had witnessed this happening to him and he had more than all his sisters combined. He died a year later from these meds at 41. We let it go. Soon after I started getting many of the health symptoms that he had prior to being placed on these medications. I was told aniety and they precribe me paxil. My breast were growing like never before. I am a waitress and was asked what the hell is with me. I joked the big guy above sent me breast for my 40th birthday. But I knew it was not good and much health problems developed after this short period of paxil. Two CT scans prior did not show why I had such suffering. Ater taking paxil I had a third CT and was told they would be doing an emergency operation to revmove what they believed may be a tumor near the left ovary. I believed it was from taking the paxil but was told absolutely not responsible. I was blessed it was benign. I have searched for many years for what is going on at a root level with my health and have gone before many of the top specialist in the Boston area. I now am finding out that the root of my health is from Celiac Disease which is one of the most overlooked Autiomune diseases in our country. One of my MRI's showed hyperinflamation of my pituitary, a year later a microendenom there. I have so much more. But my reason for writing this is because they are finding connections with chilhood ADD, Autism, Childhood Diabetes and much more connected to this one autiomune disease. Each child deserves a chance to live as a child not as a bipoduct of experimental meds. You can reverse and live a fulfilling happy life without meds if you read of this. The View, The Iron Chef Show, Celtics played the 76's on March 9th, Sandra bullocks husband on the Donald Trump show did one of these meals and stayed in. Most of you Beer company's are in strong competion to make the best gluten free Beer. Budweiser is in the running. It is an autimune disease from gluten based foods medications etc. Awareness is needed not trials where we use our kids as mice. It is time for awareness to grow beyond the experiments of meds and teach the diet concept of disease. Especially this one. You really need to know of its long term complications and that if a child or adult does have this than most of these medication also have a gluten base whick can do more harm then good. For all of the products of my generation and my children's generation it is scary to know that everyday more and more we are eating 7 grain breads pizza donuts etc as was not my parents time. My kids are grown and showing this at a serious level now. The next generation is my biggest fear. We are a gluten filled world and awareness of this Autiomune disease and how it causes other Autiomene diseases to develop if over looked is sad. Please help make awareness of Celiac and help prevent a world of medicated kids.

My daughter has been on Risperdal for about a year now. She will be 6 in August. In the past 6 months I have noticed that she had started developing breasts. My daughter was brought to me as a foster child at 8 months old. I have adopted her. Not knowing her medical history I thought it was potentially a side effect from poor prenatal care. But my mom woke up at 3:30 this morning to a news story about Risperdal causing irreversible breast growth in boys. I just read in this article that there is still question about girls. I think I may have the evidence in my home that it does happen with girls!

My 10 year old son was given Risperdal for Autistic related issues...All I'm going to say is Thank G-d I had an ill feeling about putting drugs in my child's system...after being given Adderall at a young age, my son started showing signs of a Touretters like tick that never went away after the drug was stopped.....I am so glad I learned y lesson from that experience and my heart goes out to those families who trusted the promise of the drug companies that thier son's or daughter's would benefit from taking this drug!!!!!What is wrong with this country???They give us drugs for arthritis with a side effect of heart failure......use your brains people....wouldn't you rather live with arthritis pain?????

My son was placed on Risperdal when he was 5, come to find out it was only 2 weeks after it was approved for his age group, which is upsetting to me. However, he is 7 now and aside from his constant thirst and hunger, the medication has seemed to be fine. He currently suffers from ODD/SED, Bi-Polar and some say a mild form of Aspergers - I am concerned about long term use, though. He's been on it for 20 months, and before hand, his behavior was beyond control. I really wish I was notified about ALL the side effect dangers BEFORE it was prescribed to my child. Why aren't doctors mandated to disclose the information?
