Minnesota Man Gets Reprieve From Involuntary ECT

From MindFreedom I learned yesterday that Ray Sandford, whom I wrote about last week, has been given a one-week reprieve from the forced, involuntary ECT treatments he's had to endure in recent months. The bad news is that he's scheduled for another go-round next Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.

Nice touch.

Huh? What's the logic behind giving him a one-week holiday, I wonder? The mind boggles!

This is nothing compared to what is described in the attached court decision:

Anyone else get a vague, condescending and long-winded letter back from LSS with irony deficient references to "vulnerable populations"? Mind your own bidness, WE have been charged with caring for the vulnerable! Translation: it's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it.

Dear Philip:

Reducing his treatments to every other week isn't like a real reprieve; they have just slowed down the drip rate on the water torture device.

Please keep calling and writing; apply the pressure on Minnesota and the Governor to stop this inhumane forced treatment policy they have in place.

NO MORE RAY SANDFORD'S PLEASE! IT’S TIME FOR GOVERNMENT TO STOP ALLOWING FORCED PSYCHIATRIC TORTURE IN THIS COUNTRY!

Yours Truly,
Stan

I think I got a copy of that same long-winded letter from Lutheran Social Services described by flawedplan. It contains a phrase referring to "... the medical situation of a vulnerable adult". I forwarded it to the MindFreedom office and got a response back saying that it was probably some kind of form letter ("boilerplate", they said) because a lot of people had received the same thing from LSS - and had sent copies to MindFreedom.

I not only wrote to the above people, I also wrote to both Norm Coleman and Al Franken. One of these two men are going to tbe the next Senator, and they should be in the loop, no matter who wins or not.

Will the shrink come in the day before thanksgiving to forcibly give Mr. Sandford more ECT or will he get another 1 week reprieve?

Anyone know the status on Mr. Sandford? :(

Lisa,

Unfortunately, it is continuing. See this link:

http://www.mindfreedom.org/shield/ray/alert-5-sandford.

Ironically, on the day he is scheduled to have it, 12/10, that is International Human Rights day.

MindFreedom is encouraging everyone to call the Minnesota Governor's office before Wednesday the 10th of December.

Sandford has no chance of being dismissed from the forced ECT unless he can receive a decent advocate, not one appointed by the court. Because Ray can speak for himself, is verbal and has expressed his opinion of NOT wanting ECT, there is no humane reason for him to receive this treatment against his will.

It is more than ironic that he is going to have involuntary out patient ECT treatment on International Human Rights Day.

There are atrocities that happen in war zones, in cities, in psych hospitals, on the streets, everywhere...but here is a man who is just about my age, being driven from his residence to receive a barbaric treatment, it is hideous.

CALL the Governor of Minnesota and ask him a very simple question:

Why is a man being forced to have ECT against his will? (and does he promote it happening in his state?)

When I think about what Mr. Sandford being forcibly dragged to ECT, it makes me want to throw up. I wish I could ask his sorry excuse for a doctor what kind of impact he/she thinks dragging a patient out of his home, tying him down & forcing him to have ECT has on mood.

Lisa, it makes me sick thinking about who is representing Ray Sandford as an advocate or attorney. In the end, with the mental health system, that is who can speak for him the best---and they sure are not!
