November 04, 2008ADHD Meds Prescriptions Up 40 Percent In Just 3 YearsThat's right, a study just out in the new issues of Pediatrics notes that the use of medications for "chronic" conditions in kids exploded between 2002 and 2005. Among the big gainers were diabetes meds at a 100 percent growth rate and ADHD meds at a 40 percent increase (anti-depressant scrips went up by only 1.8 percent. Considering how rapidly ADHD meds use grew amongst kids in the 1990s--I don't have the exact figures, but as I recall it was huge growth, like 400 percent or so--this hardly represents a leveling off. Much of the increase was among girls. You've got to wonder what is going on in American culture when drugs that were already widely used had their use increase by 40 percent in just three years. It's like we've become ADHD nation. Or maybe I ought to say ADHD-diabetes nation. Posted by Philip Dawdy at November 4, 2008 08:43 AM

How else am I suppose to get through college? Full time work, full time school...It's not like the studying and homework is going to do itself, and there is no way I can do it all without help. Maybe if I had an extra 20 hours a week to not be as efficient while I study. Many people I know are in the same boat. Posted by: Me at November 4, 2008 10:36 AMThat's drug abuse. Posted by: Sophia at November 4, 2008 12:49 PMEfficient drug abuse atleast. Posted by: anon at November 4, 2008 02:49 PMI'm 50 years old, and was 're-diagnosed' with Adult ADD about 10 years ago. I tried to get the diagnosis, and it was easy. Because we're all pretty much ADD, with the culture we live in being the cause. I wasn't able to keep my job @ a PC workstation, do all the multi-tasking, etc. that is demanded of so many of us these daze'n'times, without the focus (read: limiting) provided by this crap. I went into it with eyes wide open, knowing that I'm not 'really' ADD. The culture is. It's what I have to willingly do to turn myself into a cog in the machine. Posted by: Mork at November 4, 2008 05:40 PMI can't believe I live in a country in which eating and sleeping appear to have become optional activities. I also cannot believe that my great-niece was the ONLY child not on Ritalin in her third-grade rural NH school room. Yikes. From comments I've read elsewhere, it appears young people without ADHD are getting prescriptions to enhance their academic performance. This is really disturbing, imo. Posted by: marcia (2) at November 5, 2008 09:08 AMYa know, I think plenty of people ARE getting through college without abusing drugs. Maybe working part-time, going to school part-time might be options. "I can't believe I live in a country in which eating and sleeping appear to have become optional activities." I agree, Sherry. I also think it's more "normal" to not be able to hold a job at a PC workstation if it's supposedly so standard to require performance-enhancing drugs, and that the culture is not "normal." It's sick. People really think this is such a great country in which there is basically no middle class lifestyle for average people and the pressure on us is driving us crazy. Fuck this.
