October 03, 2008I'm Being HarassedSome of you regulars are aware of a commenter who sometimes uses the handle "Poe." He's an Australian anti-psychiatrist who drinks far too much and has a very bad temper and is utterly obsessed with me and this site. I've tried to ban him numerous times and have sent him numerous cease and desist warnings, but since he's in Oz he's beyond my reach. What's more, he uses a wireless Internet connection, so banning his IP address is ineffective. Even more, he's begun using US-based proxy servers so he can get around whatever I might try to impose on Aussie addresses. I'm not sure what this boy's problem is with me, but apparently my refusal to declare psychiatry a crime and call for violence against doctors and my use of psychiatric diagnoses (or "labeling" as he calls it) angers him to no end, even though I am highly critical of psychiatry and so on. Obviously, his attacks are designed to ruin this site and drive off readers. Some of the things he's said in comments I've managed to catch are so off the charts that I won't even try to describe them. He's a very angry, bitter drunk who was likely diagnosed with schizophrenia and stuck in a hospital for ages and thinks his version of identity politics will improve humanity. Why he's taking his anger out on me and all of you instead of starting his own blog is beyond me. Why he doesn't just grow up and get on with his life is beyond me. I'm just telling you about this so you know what's up. Some of his comments will leak through from time to time, some I'll catch, but basically I'm done trying to stop him. He's so obsessed and net savvy that it's simply not possible for me to monitor him anymore. Posted by Philip Dawdy at October 3, 2008 11:02 AM

Philip, thank you for the explanation. I suggest that we opt for the urban dweller's response to being in a public place with an obnoxious drunk. Ignore him and keep him from ruining your conversation/day. Right. So we adopt the urban dweller's attitude toward obnoxious, intrusive strangers: ignore him and continue our conversation. Thank goodness it's in print, so we can read around him, rather than having to shout over him or give up trying to talk. I suspect that acknowledging that he's getting to you and your readers is what motivates him to continue. Once he decides that you're no "fun" anymore, he'll move on. Posted by: Romeo Vitelli at October 3, 2008 12:29 PMI'm very disappointed, Poe. I still become out of control angry living in a world where only a select group of people on the internet even understand the harm done to me. No validation from family, friends, the law, the state that violated me, it's a tough thing to face and begin your adult life with. All anyone else cares about is 'when are you going to productive in the economy and stop being a slacker' You said it on this comment. If this is the activism you are planning to do for the rest of your life I don't thing you will help you or anybody who has been harmed by psych-drugs or the whole way treatments are being done. Internet Stalking is a very serious situation whose suspects have a scary psychopathy. We like to ignore them but please don't forget about the mother in Michigan who harassed the teenage girl until she killed herself. Maybe it is time to gove SPD a call, have them come over for 30 minutes to take a report and ask them to refer the report to customs, to have this dude put on a no fly list!!!! He is clearly a threat to you, an American citizen and needs to stay down under...... Posted by: Angie at October 3, 2008 01:51 PMI agree with Angie. Philip, you don't deserve this kind of headache. Ana, please take care of yourself, I was wondering why your blog has been quiet the last couple of days.
Yep report the idiot to authorities. Frankly, it's a sad and twisted person who behaves this way behind a computer screen. But they love the attention. Posted by: Stephany at October 3, 2008 07:03 PMOh Phillip, I'm horrified by this situation. I'm new to blogging and computers, having started mine in April and learning on the fly by trial and error. I'd wondered about when commenting on some MH blogs, the statement "To prevent maliscious comments...." would come up. Probably on your site! It's obscene that this wanker is glomming on to your blog. I fancy that he is such a diminished person, he hopes to get some sort of recognition through you. He has got some sort of negative groupie affect going on. If he can comment on your award winning blog, he can gain some sort of recognition. He's riding on your tail. It's also a matter of trust with your readership. Most of us who come here respect your intense devotion to your subject. We can spot an arse-hole when they stink up your site! Although obviously it is distressing for you, because you have to waste time responding to his vitriol. When I grew up, I spent a fair amount of time in an all girls boarding school. I'm sure that you are familiar with the psychological cruelty of girls. One of the most effective "punishments" was a thing called "Coventry". This meant that no one would look or talk to you. I think that "Poe" should be sent to Coventry. Although I suspect that wherever he lives, he's already experiencing it. If the best that you can do with your life is send hate-beams, then you have a shoddy experience. I recommend that the next time he vomits on your blog, suggest to him that he would find a vast network of similar minded people freaks in the Scientologists. You know, the kind of people who are just up his freaky road to oblivion. All my best wishes, Dano. PS, Here's the link to the "Brilliant Blogs" award that I gave you: I'm really sorry to hear this. I used to enjoy Poe's contributions. I gather they got more extreme after that. Posted by: Francesca Allan at October 3, 2008 09:13 PMTreat it like graffiti, keep moderation on and clean it off as soon as possible but don't respond. Is there any way he can track you down I know your name is Philip and you live in Seattle (I am hoping that Philip is a pseudonym. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/7636821.stmand seattle is a big place) Posted by: E at October 3, 2008 10:34 PM I'm sorry you're being harrassed. This guy gives us anti-psychiatry folks a bad name. I'm against psychiatry as it's practiced today, but I am not against psychiatrists. I would never endorse violence against anyone. This harrassment is uncalled for and you certainly don't deserve this. I am so sorry it's happening. Posted by: Jayme at October 4, 2008 04:42 AMDearest Philip: Sounds like someone has a crush on you {blush}, you may have to send a cute sheep to keep him/her at bay this time {laughing}. Well said Jayme. Us anti-psychiatry folks have a hard enough time as it is. Posted by: Sally at October 5, 2008 06:25 AMOh, I don't think you should ban the guy... Nor ignore him - I know what it is to be ignored - either because I'm on a touchy subject, or because it appears that there's just no reasoning with me, or because people can't deal with anger/conflict, or because I just say something that appears plain weird, and outside one's experience - it's horrible to be ignored. Takes you back to your childhood. Just tip me the nod when he comments, if you like. I'll see if I can find out what he's really angry about. If his model for life includes provoking people until they ignore him (and then turning around and saying "see, I knew you'd abandon me"), then we should keep talking to him, and mess up his shitty-looking world view. Matt Posted by: Matthew Holford at October 6, 2008 03:46 PMDoes he use a laptop from said wireless IP's? - Block his MAC address. If he uses Public Computers, a log of his MAC adresses and IP's will denote which area/library/internet cafe/friends address/etc. he is using - a simple harassment letter will solve the issue, failing that - a call to the internet ninja community (who shall always remain *anonymous*) will sort the problem - permanently, no doubt.
