October 13, 2008Columbus DayToday is a holiday of sorts--not so much in this part of the country unless you work for the government or a bank--so I'm going to observe the holiday. I might throw up a post or two later. BTW, thanks for the many kinds thoughts regarding my journalistic Mendoza Line. One commenter noted that this blog is likely getting in the way of my employment prospects, even within the allegedly open-minded media industry. I think this person is right. And that saddens me. That thought crossed my mind too about the blog actually hurting rather than helping at this point. I know many people, even in the mainstream media, who think you're "good" and that means "really good," but I still think the blog frightens a lot people and they're more comfortable viewing it as a fringe activity. I still hope you can find a way into something more "traditional." Get some feedback from that editor/owner fellow who turned you down as an assistant manager. You need some advice from people you know in the "real world," not just cyberspace, on how to proceed from here. Posted by: Sara at October 13, 2008 07:36 AMthe trouble sara is that no one in the media world can advise me because what's going on in the media economy is such uncharted waters. most of them don't even know how to keep their own ships afloat. Posted by: Philip Dawdy at October 13, 2008 10:04 AMPhilip it;s the same thing when I speak out about the local mental health system, I can't often say (believe it or not)what I want to, because my daughter is IN the system. Also, I wouldn't worry though too much about what you say here affecting job outcome, because media ppl (as you know) understand a blog format vs. print. Reading your print publications is far different that the blog, I hope readers have taken the time to read your work. Also, the glossy magazine that doesn't pay writers in a timely fashion? It's an unpredictable market for that thing too, hell it's way too overpriced. But what I've seen you write in it was excellent as usual. The problem with Seattle is it is smaller than most ppl realize, and the media connections are like all in the same bar at night talking so to speak. If a (for example)young snotty editor feels threatened by a quality journalist with integrity---THAT is the real problem here. Not you or your work.
