September 24, 2008Study: Paxil Damages SpermReuters has brief coverage of a forthcoming study from Cornell researchers asserting that Paxil damages sperm cells in healthy men. " A study of 35 healthy men given paroxetine--sold as Paxil or Seroxat by GlaxoSmithKline--found that, on average, the proportion of sperm cells with fragmented DNA rose from 13.8 percent before treatment to 30.3 percent after just four weeks. Gee, I wonder how defenders of the anti-depressant faith will spin this bit of research. Man, if this doesn't drive men into therapy before taking an anti-depressant, then nothing will. Researchers offered these thoughts: "'The fertility potential of a substantial proportion of men on paroxetine may be adversely affected by these changes in sperm DNA integrity,' the experts concluded." Do you think? More on this when the full study is presented. Posted by Philip Dawdy at September 24, 2008 11:20 AM

A friend of mine became infertile from taking Seroxat (Paxil) for 14 years. He also lost his hair, and most of his quality of life. It is an absolute outrage that this disgustingly defective drug is still on the market. BAN IT NOW!
I had the snip [vasectomy] some years ago. I could have saved myself the indignity of getting my meat and two veg out for the surgeon!
"Every Sperm is Sacred!"... Besides, if you get rid of the sperm.... it makes swallowing so much harder.....It really tastes bad if that is missing.... Yeah, I am so hypersexual and manic right now. But it is a sobering thought that what we put in our bodies can destroy and damage sperm and eggs. They should have black box warnings for this too.
I am surprised there haven't been more drug implicated in damaging reproductive DNA. There are so MANY different natural and man-made compounds which bind and influence DNA, that it is amazing we are even able to reproduce successfully. Successful reproduction by itself is such a crap shoot, that is why there are so many unsuccessful conceptions to begin with. Posted by: Tony at September 24, 2008 02:54 PMInternational Brand Names * Aropax (LU, MX) Why do they change the brand names like this? The American Society for Reproductive Medicine is also concerned with men who became impotent even after off the drug. Has any mag, let's say Times or Newsweek, ever had any article on this tiny little problem? I bet they said it was "psychological" and has nothing to due with SSRIs!:) Therapy before anti-depressant? Totally Off-Topic: I was talking to a biologist today and she told me that autism has to due with... wheat flour and some other things that causes I don't remember what on stomach that... she said that the problem is related only with speech not an mental impairment. I know, I know I have a blog but if I say it here everybody can read. Sorry Philip! Posted by: Ana at September 24, 2008 02:55 PMI was told my inability to orgasm once starting AD's was psychological... I'm one of the lucky folk who recovered completely from that ill once getting off the offending medications thank god... I'm not entirely recovered from doctors telling me my problem was frigidity. And denying what I knew was the truth... I hate to say it, but when I say this post I laughed! I thought one more fucking nail in the SSRI coffin...bring the death on... Posted by: Gianna at September 24, 2008 05:47 PMThis is certainly interesting, and I look forward to reading the full article once it is published for a fuller assessment. However, offhand this is a small sample (35 subjects) with no placebo group, which means that it is a good initial investigation, but is hardly conclusive. Also, if the results can be replicated with larger RCT's, then that would certainly change how I would present the risks associated with SSRI's to my patients. However, if a medication causes potential infertility, then should it be banned? Other substances that cause infertility: alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, corticosteroids, X-rays, chemotherapy, and so on. Perhaps we should ban all those substances, as well as antidepressants? I mean, we should not have double standards, right? Posted by: dguller at September 24, 2008 07:34 PM
"MALE BIRTH CONTROL!" Posted by: NAP at September 24, 2008 09:40 PMJust wanted to let (male) readers know that there's a good (i.e. negative) article about antidepressants in this month's issue of Men's Health by Paul Scott. In fact he doesn't have one good thing to say about antidepressants in the entire article. Unfortunately it's not available on line but check it out the next time you're in the grocery store. Posted by: Sara at September 25, 2008 11:24 AMIs the Men's Health article about antidepressants in the Sept 2008 issue with David Beckham on the cover?
