Seroquel Touted For Anxiety

The press release machine that is WebMD has this on a new study of Seroquel in anxiety:

"In the new study, 854 generalized anxiety disorder patients were given either Seroquel XR, Lexapro (a prescription drug approved to treat generalized anxiety disorder and depression), or a placebo without knowing which pill they were receiving.

"For eight weeks, the patients took their assigned pills daily. During that time, Seroquel XR and Lexapro beat the placebo at reducing anxiety, according to surveys completed by the patients."

No information on how big of a benefit was received. No information on what doses patients took. Interestingly, AstraZeneca itself hasn't put out a press release on this study which was presented at a conference in Europe earlier this week. Antipsychotics for anxiety? Sounds awesome to me.

AZ submitted data earlier this year to the FDA for approval of Seroquel for anxiety and depression.

I think psychiatry has run out of ideas. If you back a couple decades, the "antipsychotics" were just considered "tranquilizers." They were like barbiturates, only decidedly less fun and less likely to cause behavioral problems due to disinhibition. As a result, you had docs giving out Thorazine, Mellaril, etc. in varying doses for all sorts of "neurotic" complaints.
And now...seroquel, the Thorazine for our age, has decided to seek FDA approval for what has already become a common practice (from what I understand, lots of shrinks are using atypicals off-label, especially if the doc has problems with benzos or the patient has a history of substance abuse).

I was given Seroquel for insomnia and anxiety. It worked for awhile. Then I got more Seroquel. When my Seroquel was up to 1000mgs, they then added 4mg of Xanax XR and a few grams of Neurontin. After that stopped working, I got 2000mgs of Depakote. I was also on a lot of prozac. Now I'm kind of stuck, at 1000mgs of Seroquel, off Depakote for a few years now. This is all very problematic. These drugs are sold as not being addictive drugs like my one closely monitored vicodin prescriptioin, but I find them more addictive than even cigarettes which I gave up a year ago, too. I wonder what you can do. They don't have rehab for seroquel, so what do you do, if you can't do it alone? I lived through a tornado that destroyed my home, and didn't get anxiety. That leaves me to wonder about the other "anxiety" that I have and whether it's really a side effect of all of this stuff.
