September 05, 2008Cymbalta, Seroquel Being Investigated By FDA For Overdose, Urinary ProblemsThe FDA is just out with a list of drugs it identified as having major issues which the agency needs to investigate, based upon data from the first quarter of the year. Two psych meds make the list of 20 drugs and I list them below with their approved use and the problem being investigated: "Cymbalta, for depression and other conditions, urinary retention. Urinary retention sounds like a perfectly awful side effect of an anti-depressant. But then so do overdoses of Seroquel. Other drugs on the list are OxyContin, Heparin and Dilantin. It'll be interesting to see what the FDA turns up. Posted by Philip Dawdy at September 5, 2008 12:16 PM

It wasn't so long ago that pharma was pushing urinary retention as a benefit of Cymbalta. Let's not forget that Traci Johnson was in a clinical trial for urinary incontinence, NOT depression, when she died. They were trying to get duloxetine (its scientific name) approved for that, not depression. Duloxetine has been paraded out for all sorts of crazy indications since it first came on the scene umpteen years ago in an effort to find a market for it. Wouldn't you know it finally found its home in the psych world as so many drugs with no obvious place to go do? Posted by: Sara at September 5, 2008 02:48 PMelavil(amitriptyline) is used for urine retention too. Posted by: jenna at September 5, 2008 04:04 PMThis just infuriates me, due to the fact that Traci Johnson died as a healthy young college-age student seeking money from a drug trial in Lilly's lab for urinary incontinence!. To push the drug for use for depression and pain management is downright criminal and greedy. I find this urinary retention a sad ironic twist to Traci's story, and her story should be a warning for anyone entering a drug trial, especially vulnerable young people. Lilly is far too close to a college campus, I hope those kids understand the dangerous practices Lilly does to promote their medications. Lilly, the creator of one of the most dangerous and deadly psych meds ever marketed: Zyprexa; and Cymbalta is their next one that is practically impossible to withdraw from. Posted by: Stephany at September 6, 2008 04:11 AMPsychiatric attendants and parents want their wards sedated but they don't like changing sheets? Posted by: Sally at September 6, 2008 06:57 AMThe clinical test Traci Johnson has volunteered was also to test as an antidepressant but it was not said to her neither to the four others volunteers that has also died. "According to an investigation by the London Independent newspaper, all five deaths were "hidden" by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA gave a legal rationale for its silence: "Some clinical trial data are considered 'trade secrets', or commercially protected information, and thus are exempted from release under the Freedom of Information Act." This is from Independent back on 2006 in a good article with an interview with Peter Bregguin who was in Ireland. I'm happy knowing that Cymbalta side effect is urinary retention. Good job FDA! Your work is getting better year after year! We have to admit that they do a wonderful job concealing the truth and mixing informations. I would also like to thank FDA for helping selling psych meds around the world. Many countries put on newspapers FDA's views on some drugs. People don't know what FDA stands for and as it's a REGULATOR AGENCY everybody think that being approved by FDA is a safety guarantee. Posted by: Ana at September 6, 2008 08:56 AMPS: Let's not forget the first Elli-Lilly's creation: The Cymbalta clinical thrial for duloxetine that Traci Johnson was doing was for "Stress urinary incontinence" - "a condition in which women leak urine with they laugh or sneeze" and the duoloxetine brand name is Yentreve. It's all explained here: Traci's body was found dead in February, 7 2004 and Cymbalta was on the market in August, 2004. I never found the name of the other 4 volunteers who were depressed and committed suicide on Elli-Lilly's facilities. Posted by: Ana at September 6, 2008 12:05 PMI think this list is feeble and far from complete (even Seroquel is not being examined for much, and there are no killer antipsychotics or SSRIs here) but this little requirement did get put in the new PDUFA bill, I think, so I guess the FDA has to make the gesture. Pharma probably doesn't like it. Posted by: Sorrowful at September 6, 2008 12:22 PMOne more MAJOR negative for Cymbalta but unrecognized (except by those who have been taking it). I don't drink, and find it offensive for someone to place blame for certain individuals uncontrolled addiction on a DRUG. Posted by: Dee at July 22, 2009 02:22 PMPost a comment
