Viagra, Now For Depressed Women

A study out in JAMA went after the tricky problem of women going off anti-depressants due to sexual dysfunction side effects by giving a group of women Viagra while another group got placebo. According to the study, 72 percent of women saw improved sexual functioning while only 27 percent did who got a placebo. Of course, at about $10 a pill, taking Viagra would be a very expensive proposition. And, given studies of just how long-lasting sexual dysfunction is for so people taking anti-depressants and how long it can last once the drugs are discontinued, then it'll be Viagra for life for some patients.

Researchers summed up their findings thus:

"'By treating this bothersome treatment-associated adverse effect in patients who have been effectively treated for depression, but need to continue on their medication to avoid relapse or recurrence, patients can remain antidepressant-adherent, reduce the current high rates of premature medication discontinuation, and improve depression disease management outcomes,' wrote lead author George Nurnberg of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine."

Or perhaps they could ditch the anti-depressant altogether and try CBT or other therapies. Just a thought.

...And then another pill for the side-effects of Viagra, and another pill for the side-effects of that pill, etc. etc. etc.

I tried Viagra a good ten years ago...my doctor was always ahead of the curve when it came to doling out the drugs...it didn't do a damn thing...useless...

I have to wonder about the validity of the results of the study...women with sexual dysfunction due to anti-depressants is a huge market...and lots of those women will keep on taking the crap whether it works or not just like so many of us do with psych meds until smartening up anyway...

This is sickening but so predictable. In recent days I have found out that taking SSRIs is not only linked to sexual dysfunction (both temporary and persistent as has been discussed on this site before) but also infertility -- put that in your calculator! Women taking SSRIs have a much harder time conceiving than women who don't. This is from a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It messes up ovulation cycles big time. I really am coming around to believing these drugs should be banned in women of child-bearing age. One thing is for sure young women are not being informed of these adverse effects at all before being handed the drugs.

All of these drugs effect metabolism and hormonal imbalance in women and men. I love how they are attempting to keep a medication on board at any cost.

I'm with Gianna on this one. I too was given a script for Viagra when my partner at the time thought it would bring back a dead in the water libido brought on by a crushing depression and a med cocktail which was at the time, lithium, and Seroquel.

It didn't do anything. The relationship ended shortly thereafter.

Decreased sexual functioning is a great reason to stop taking antidepressants or to keep taking them while getting out of a bad relationship. Outside of all of my antipsych concerns, it seems plain dangerous to prescribe such a drug in combination with another drug know to be causing the dysfunchtion, like there'd be serious risk of heart attack and/or stroke.

Bizarrely, when I got in from work tonight this story was on NBC nightly news as a miraculous break through...sick.

This is funny! Haven't they done the same test back on 2005 and the result was that it does not work for women?
At least I've read something about it and a psychiatrist, one of those who love to pre$cribe, also said it does not work for women.
Coming from him it's a good evidence it does not work for I'm sure he must be prescribing Viagra fom 85 years old man or even for children - I'm sure he will make up a good explanation on how its necessary to start medicating on a early age because.... .

some buzz-kill-- this struck me briefly as amusing, then weak, and ultimately scary. because a medication prescribed permanently as part of a psych treatment is a far cry from being prescribed on request a fun performance enhancing drug. in psychiatry it's too slippery a slope down from useless, to coercive, to forced. -- women and madness have a dicey past. a women's sexuality is too personal, too stigmatized, and too commercialized to let an institution define, drug, and experiment with it.

Just now I've noticed that 27% placebo has worked!
That's good!
I would rather go with the placebo.
But these SSRIs works in mysterious ways. I had problems and all of a sudden they disappeared. Lucky me! I believe it's my body that has made any change to adjust to Efexor side effect.
