June 08, 2008Harvard Researchers Didn't Reveal Full Pharma PayoffsThe New York Times today has an article on revelations that Joe Biederman, the controversial Harvard child psychiatrist, did not fully report money he was receiving from pharma companies. He made well over $1 million in recent years doing research, and the lack of disclosure by him and others in his group may limit future grants to other researchers at the University. More on this tomorrow. I simply wanted to make you all aware of it right now. Posted by Philip Dawdy at June 8, 2008 11:03 AM

Thanks. As I said before and will again in replies, deeds not words are what define us. I am ashamed to have to call him a colleague. No matter what he says to defend his behavior, it is indefensible. There is no place for greed or profit in health care. PERIOD! Posted by: therapyfirst at June 8, 2008 11:11 AMOh my GOD! Posted by: Stephany at June 8, 2008 11:51 AMHaa! hahahaha! Posted by: Lilly NC at June 8, 2008 12:01 PMShady describes the drug dealers hustling near the school playground as well as some of the physician scientists "researching" children's mental health at one of the nation's finest universities?!! Science with integrity is in the best interest of children and all living things. Wouldn't it be swell if the researchers described in NYT article donated their underreported consulting fees to Furious Seasons this week? lol Posted by: Moira at June 8, 2008 12:18 PMIt delighted me in a grim sort of way to see this article on the front page of the paper, right up there in the second column, a great spot for it. Go, reporters, for broadcasting this in the way it deserves! I hope we'll be hearing about Joe Biederman's suspension from the Harvard faculty soon, although I suppose he'll wriggle out of it somehow. Kudos to Grassley too for pursuing this disclosure. At the very least I hope this puts a cloud on the bipolar research being done on little kids. Posted by: Sara at June 8, 2008 12:26 PMWow, on the front page, how cool. I didn't realize that at first as I read the NYT online. Ironically, if a child "found" money and failed to report it, Biderman would label that as manic behavior, per the dsm, "excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences (e.g., engaging in unrestrained buying sprees, sexual indiscretions, or foolish business investments)." That's the prong where stealing gets the bipolar label, stealing millions, hmmmm, sounds manic to me. Wonder if Biderman is going to claim mania as an excuse or fight that oppressive label he's destroyed so many lives with. Posted by: Sally at June 8, 2008 01:49 PMSally, that's a priceless thought -- hoisted by his own petard as it were. Posted by: Sara at June 8, 2008 02:32 PMThat's fine with me Biederman knows what he is doing. I'd hand my newborn son over to him. I would even let him perform an in utero intramuscular injection on my unborn daughter. Why not? Go for gold. I'm all about health and help. As a matter of fact I am fully in agreement. Human distress is a medical disease. That is proven hands down. I see nothing wrong with doping up generations on psychotropic guesswork pharmacology. As a matter of fact I am sure that decades of unnatural never seen in nature neurological perturbment from psychiatry will have no adverse effect on the quality of the ovum and sperm that the coming generations will produce. As a matter of fact I am dead certain that if you took the delorean back to early man and set generations of cavemen on lifetimes of psych meds that would be just fine and dandy. We might even be smarter and happier. After all, human distress is a disease that needs to be eradicated. And who better to play a hand in killing this terrible biological defect that pervades us all than future nobel laureates like Biederman. His fine ivy league institution gave us such breakthroughs as napalm, which eradicated the disease that was vietnamese villagers, so I am all for trusting this giant of a man. Give him millions more. I will generate more kids for him to help, and he can deservedly build a huge mansion on the hill. And we can look up at that mansion and just marvel at the genius scientist that is working his magic behind those gates. And us plebs can rest assured... that we are blessed to have such fine scientific minds among us, sharing the planet with these masters of the universe is something you should be in awe of... what a time to be alive. Breathe in the genius. Thank god our government and media are on his side and he will have the support he needs to give us the help we need. What would have become of the human race without psychiatry? I shudder to think what dire straights we would be in. No one needs to have a moody teenager ever again. No one needs to suffer with today's pharmacology. Life is treatable people. We'll be fine. The drug companies just want to help him. They want to help us. They want to heal our defective kids. Hell, if we weren't such inferior imperfect genetic mistakes ourselves, he'd be free to pain landscapes for a career. We should thank HIM for donating his brilliant superior genes to helping us out of the primordial soup. Maybe when he is done helping our kids he can become commander in chief. Thankyou Dr. Biederman... thankyou for choosing to help us and our kids, and not choosing to become a landscape artist. There was this one guy, this austrian born german politician who wanted to be a landscape artist, who chose to help us his country in politics. Guess you're kind of like him. Very selfless. Selfless qualities in his genes and yours Dr. Biederman. Until next time. Get your stinking ideology off our neurology you indoctrinated ideologue, you kill people for a living. I'd like to see you locked in a windowless room and given massive doses of neuroleptics for 20 years and then hung. Andy Smith, Connecticut, born 2000. Welcome to akasthisia. You'll never know, but the ideologues your parents trusted with your mind and body are the cause of your death in 2015 when it all became too much. Maybe we should take the delorian back to Dr. Biederman's childhood, tell him he has incurable brain disease, apply the most lethal stigma of all to his school playground life, drug him to the point of kidney failure, and just see what kind of ivy league mind develops. Maybe he will grow up and be the Kay Redfield Jamison of childhood bipolar. Maybe he will grow up and invade poland. Maybe psychiatry's a pseudoscience that needs to destroyed. Organic neurology until proven defective. Hey guys, did you hear about the guy who ate organic vegetables and meat, stayed out of diesel fumes, didn't drink or smoke, yet perturbed his brain with guesswork psych meds his whole life? Did you hear about that guy? He lived happily ever after that's what happened to him. Did you hear about the kid who overcame a childhood bipolar diagnosis to go on to become an astronaut and president? Did you hear about the kid who overcame a childhood bipolar diagnosis to go on to become 25? You never will. First you have to be smart enough at age 8 to do what I barely was able to do in my 20s. Cut through the ideology being sold to you, survive the drug induced damage, survive the stigma, survive the bleak disease picture being sold to you by vested interests, find your way out of the most diabolical maze MAN HAS EVER created and do it blindfolded and with your hands tied. Try doing that when you are a kid. Let's take a life, a child's life, a douse it in lamictal and set fire to it in the name of your own career. Hitler comparison is a worthy comparison. For the modern pharmaceutical holocaust that we are living through, has its leaders, and by god I would love it to end and have its (Neuro)mberg Then maybe the global community could find a safe homeland for us. And we could buy the media outlets. Posted by: Poe at June 8, 2008 04:20 PMIt would be fitting to think of Biederman as having manic depression, as he has played disease mongerer on helpless children with this label. However, the label that I think fits him best is ....EVIL.(I wonder if EVIL will make it into the DSM one of these days, along with everything else). Harvard will really be tarnished if they don't kick this guy out. How much suffering he has caused. Posted by: Sorrowful at June 8, 2008 04:24 PMI burst out in laughter when I saw it too...my god. Posted by: Gianna at June 8, 2008 05:54 PMI hope this medical model goes down in flames as a result of this. This just proves that high powers result in harm to others when self is involved, I'd like to know what his motivation truly was the last decade. Biederman certainly in my opinion carries the burden of the evil side of psychiatry. He may claim to want to have helped others, and I beg to differ in that arguement. My heart breaks for every child ever drugged as a result of this influence. This is a crime. Period. Posted by: Stephany at June 8, 2008 06:33 PMGreat to see this news making headlines , those of us who have been reading about the psychiatric-pharmaceutical drug cartels would be very well aware of this kind of thing. It happens across the board in psychiatry, but it is the bigger names who command the bigger bucks. Big money brings keener whores. Labelling a child with bipolar is akin to "branding" them ,it's similar to what the nazi's did with homosexuals and jews, the pink triangles and yellow stars... The irony here is , You can trace the origins of psychiatry itself and most of the big pharmaceutical companies back to Nazi Germany and the holocaust ... Shame on these corrupt people..
