May 09, 2008"The Infinite Mind" Producer Responds To Slate.com ArticleIt's just been brought to my attention that Bill Lichtenstein has posted a response to the Slate.com piece earlier this week taking "The Infinite Mind" to task for not disclosing its Big Pharma funding as well as the ties to pharmaceutical companies of its host, Fred Goodwin, and three guests on a recent program, "Prozac Nation: Revisted." The original Slate piece is here. My earlier critique of the program (well ahead of the Slate article) is here and my thoughts on the Slate piece are here. Lichtenstein is the senior executive producer of the program. I'll let Lichtenstein's response speak for itself. Feel free to chime in in comments or go leave comments on Slate, if you are registered there. Blech, something creepy about the whole statement. This was a predictable passage: "There is, as our guests observed, no credible evidence that the use of antidepressants contributes to the sort of violence that erupted at NIU. There is, on the other hand, a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggesting that more young people may be dying in part because of the chilling effect of the FDA "black box" warning." Meaning that people are dying b/c they're too scared to take antidepressants based on the black box warning? I assume that means the lack of these "meds" makes them commit suicide? Hard to remember that people were actually able to avoid suicide before SSRI's came out. This is infuriating, there's actually no proof the the serontonin hypothesis is right either, but we ARE supposed to believe that the blessed antidepressants are the cure to suicide? I guess this is unproven too, but it sure seems that SSRI's enable our will better, which is why certain people swear by them. It's like will in a pill. That can be okay when you don't have thoughts of suicide or homicidal rage. When you do, they seem to propel you in that direction. I'm not saying this is a fact, but seems like an option... Posted by: Gabe at May 9, 2008 02:28 PMThis response doesn't really speak about the conflicts of interest but rather deflicts and spins from this issue. Of course their conflicts of interest wouldn't have taught them how to do this so well, would it? Posted by: Jane at May 9, 2008 08:00 PMSomebody needs to 'clue in' Bill Lichtenstien. He wonders why the media focused on the Prozac withdrawal of the NIU shooter rather than the bad childhood or gun collection of the shooter. People in the media have been so hurt by the SSRI antidepressants or else have seen their family memebers or friends, neighbors and acquaintances injured that, when they hear a gunman was on an SSRI or in withdrawal from an SSRI, they easily put two and two together. If a couple of people can find 2,286 tragic SSRI cases through Google News articles, and then post them to www.SSRIstories.com what could scientists do if they actually took a look at what is happening in our nation. BTW, there are now 43 school shootings/incidents with full media article available on www.SSRIstories.com/index.php As for the Big Lie on the increase in suicide among youth after the Black Box warning, this was all straightened out by several newspapers who printed the correct statistics. Still, Associated Press and the majority of the U.S. newspapers did not print the retraction. This is because there is no Freedom of the Press anymore due to Pharma owning the advertising that is keeping the newspapers & other media alive. Posted by: Rosie C. at May 9, 2008 10:21 PMI love how these guys can claim that the FDA's black box warning is wrong without being labeled mentally ill. If a psych patient argued against the FDA, it would be considered a symptom not a debate point. Posted by: Sally at May 10, 2008 12:28 AMman, I am so confused by all this. and when I told my doc that I wanted to research the drugs they want to put me on I'm told that anxiety and paranoia are part of being bipolar and I can't have a choice in the drug program as I don't really know what's happening to me!! Posted by: Kerri at May 10, 2008 08:18 AMKerri, Some years ago I discovered the power2u.org . Posted by: Ana at May 10, 2008 09:17 AM I find it an irony that this statement picks out one of the very few SSRI shootings which establishes a link between the drug and the act, and makes it appear that this happens all the time. How wrong is this! I have to hand it to the people managing "SSRI Stories" for ferreting out all that they have. For example, have you ever read an article about the fact that there are different levels of toxicology tests, some better than others at ferreting out the truth of the presence of an SSRI in someone who has killed someone and/or his/herself. I wish Karen Barthe Menzies, formerly at Baum Hedlund in Los Angeles, would write a book about it. It might give the MSM some ideas. But I am not holding my breath. Pharma pays a lot of MSM bills. Posted by: Sorrowful at May 10, 2008 04:38 PMGee, it would've been soooooooo difficult to Google Peter Pitts and Center for Medicine in the Public Interest. Would have been easy to find -- http://www.cmpi.org/about-us/founders/ -- that Pitts is a PR guy. Apparently nobody had 10 seconds of time to do a little background research. Posted by: CL Psych at May 12, 2008 04:03 AMThe expert on the show who discusses the FDA trials of the SSRIs has one of the most bizzare explanations I have ever heard. In reference to the meta analysis of the studies he says that they are "Looking at studies that are done by pharmaceutical companies to prove that their medication actually works." Is this a defense or an confession? Posted by: jonathan Leo at May 16, 2008 12:13 PMPost a comment
