New DSM Authors In Bed With Big Pharma

The Center for Science in the Public Interest reports that over half of the 28 new members of the DSM-V writing group have ties to the pharmaceutical industry (.pdf here). Well over half of the older authors already have been outed in 2006 for their ties to Big Pharma.

As I noted then:

"But the hell with the non-disclosures for a moment. Don't the 30 million to 60 million psych patients in this country deserve a health care system in which the bases of diagnoses are made independent of any conflicts with pharmaceutical companies? You bet they do. These researchers should be ashamed of themselves and so should the American Psychiatric Association, which publishes the DSM, for allowing this situation to persist. The APA promises that for the DSM's next revision in 2011 conflicts will be revealed. I have another suggestion: No one who receives a plug nickel from pharma companies should be allowed to particpate in any way in designing the DSM."

Somethings simply never change. (Via the NYT's Well blog.)

Truthman, an old internet friend did a brilliant DSM review on Amazon making the same comparison. Two days later his review disappeared.

I am glad that others can see the comparison.
Psychiatry is fascist.
I doubt if anyone could argue that to the contrary.

Posted by: truthman30 at May 6, 2008 04:41 PM

Most educated people do see the comparison, and like my friend above, most dissidents of psychiatry work within the field.

Yeap!
What a SHOCK!!!!!! :)
Bayer is searching for a drug that will be launched on 2012 that already follows the DSM-5 way of prescribing.
I'm searching to find the exact article.
Still didn't. But came across with this:

CHICAGO (AP) — There’s a grim, rarely talked-about twist to all that medical know-how doctors learn to save lives: It makes them especially good at ending their own.

An estimated 300 to 400 U.S. doctors kill themselves each year — a suicide rate thought to be higher than in the general population, although exact figures are hard to come by.

http://www.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080508/ap_on_he_me/doctor_suicides.com/articles/2008/05/09/news/doc48246f19c93ba450884650.txt

The amazing is that the
"The foundation, the American College of Psychiatrists and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals,:o) a maker of antidepressant pills, paid for the program. It includes a documentary titled "Struggling in Silence" that begins airing on public television stations this week."

Wyeth paid for the program?:o)

I believe those who kill themselves are the most ethicals.

Do you believe that someone like William Carpenter Jr. "who over the past last five years worked as a consultant for 13 drugmakers, including Pfizer, Lilly, Wyeth, Merck, Astra Zeneca, and Bristol-Myers Squibb," and is one of the members of DSM-5 Task Force Members would kill himself?

He's the Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research.
There are two others from the same University.
I don't know what else must happen.

"APA’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). The work group members are composed of more than 120 world-renowned scientific researchers and clinicians with expertise in neuroscience, biology, genetics, statistics, epidemiology, public health, nursing, pediatrics and social work."

"DSM is the manual used by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals in the United States and around the world to accurately diagnose mental disorders as the foundation for appropriate treatment,"
Is it a joke?
