May 06, 2008New DSM Authors In Bed With Big PharmaThe Center for Science in the Public Interest reports that over half of the 28 new members of the DSM-V writing group have ties to the pharmaceutical industry (.pdf here). Well over half of the older authors already have been outed in 2006 for their ties to Big Pharma. As I noted then: "But the hell with the non-disclosures for a moment. Don't the 30 million to 60 million psych patients in this country deserve a health care system in which the bases of diagnoses are made independent of any conflicts with pharmaceutical companies? You bet they do. These researchers should be ashamed of themselves and so should the American Psychiatric Association, which publishes the DSM, for allowing this situation to persist. The APA promises that for the DSM's next revision in 2011 conflicts will be revealed. I have another suggestion: No one who receives a plug nickel from pharma companies should be allowed to particpate in any way in designing the DSM." Somethings simply never change. What a SHOCK! Posted by: Stephany at May 6, 2008 01:41 PMTruthman, an old internet friend did a brilliant DSM review on Amazon making the same comparison. Two days later his review disappeared. Posted by: flawedplan at May 6, 2008 02:41 PMI am glad that others can see the comparison. Posted by: truthman30 at May 6, 2008 04:41 PM Most educated people do see the comparison, and like my friend above, most dissidents of psychiatry work within the field. Posted by: flawedplan at May 6, 2008 08:02 PMYeap! By LINDSEY TANNER An estimated 300 to 400 U.S. doctors kill themselves each year — a suicide rate thought to be higher than in the general population, although exact figures are hard to come by. http://www.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080508/ap_on_he_me/doctor_suicides.com/articles/2008/05/09/news/doc48246f19c93ba450884650.txt The amazing is that the Wyeth paid for the program?:o) I believe those who kill themselves are the most ethicals. Do you believe that someone like William Carpenter Jr. "who over the past last five years worked as a consultant for 13 drugmakers, including Pfizer, Lilly, Wyeth, Merck, Astra Zeneca, and Bristol-Myers Squibb," and is one of the members of DSM-5 Task Force Members would kill himself? He's the Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research. "DSM is the manual used by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals in the United States and around the world to accurately diagnose mental disorders as the foundation for appropriate treatment," HE DSM The thruthman DSM review disappeared?
