Man In Seroquel Study Commits Suicide

Two excellent articles in the St. Paul Pioneer-Press today examining the very ugly case of a young man who had a first episode of psychosis and was admitted to care by a doctor who basically shoehorned him into a study of Seroquel for treating schizophrenia. I won't even attempt to summarize much, so you should just read the pieces for yourself. I think there are serious questions about how the doctor may have manipulated the patient to keep him in the study even though he wasn't doing well on the drug. The patient, Dan Markingson, later committed suicide.

There are also serious questions about how the University of Minnesota's institutional review board performed.

All in all, a sad discouraging story and some excellent journalism. (Via Pharmalot.)

More reason to distrust reports of success in new medicines.
from the article "“Consequences for not following this plan,” it stated, “could result in court commitment to the hospital.”"
If he didn't like the drug, would the doctor be happy or sad? Unhappy I expect. Do you want a doctor that can commit you( to a hospital-jail) to be unhappy (with you)?

Then this insane bit "The lifetime suicide rate among schizophrenics is as high as 10 percent. Two deaths among 400 study participants wasn’t unexpected."

Lifetime suicide rate (20 average onset age - 53 life expectancy of the S.M.I.)33 years =(IS EQUAL TO) short time drug trial???? I think not.

Suicide is an uncontrollable chemical reaction in the brain? No , it is a complicated series of actions that need to take place. (for a completed suicide.)

This is sad and alarming but an important note for any patient/consumer: do not EVER allow a doctor to coerce you into a study--inpatient hospitals do this quite regularly, and I speak from experience of a decade here, and so many things I have learned, though there are many levels to my daughter's "case" the one thing I always told her was to never sign up for a study. She was offered one twice. (under age 18 too)Patients/consumers can have an advanced medical directive drawn up ahead of time, in which this is part of your plan or not, in case you do not have an advocate.

Just another part of the psych world some ppl don't "get to see". I wish I didn't know so much from experience..trust me.
