April 21, 2008The Wonder Drugs Work Wonders On The ElderlyThis is one of the most disgusting examples of the use of atypical antipsychotics in the elderly I have run across. British man develops dementia, is put in nursing home, which dopes him up big time on Zyprexa. About six months later he develops tardive diskenesia and his neck is twisted and he's left staring at the floor for the rest of his life. Then he dies. (Via Atypical Antipsychotics.) I know the usual defense for using these drugs in the elderly is that they quiet acting-out old folks who are hard for nursing home personnel to manage. I think that's a lousy defense, especially since there's very good evidence now that placebos work just as well in quieting most AD cases. Posted by Philip Dawdy at April 21, 2008 12:01 AM

I read a story where the elderly person had a medical problem that looked like dementia. the (good) doctor did not assume it was dementia and found the medical reason. treated for it, and the "dementia" went away. Posted by: mark p.s. at April 21, 2008 05:16 AMHow tragic! I thought there was a black box warning about using zyprexa in the elderly, and that it wasn't approved for dementia. Posted by: Lori at April 21, 2008 02:09 PMi've written this before, but it's worth telling, if anyone has elderly parents or grandparents in a nursing home, find a doc who WILL rx real sugar pills. back in the late 70's my grandmother had a great doctor who gave her "sugar pills", (she was agitated)and they seriously calmed her agitation down and she loved that doctor. he was ahead of his time, and to this day i wish i could find him to send him a thank you card for not drugging her up.
