Saturday Music, "Don't Think Twice"

A couple of you have noted that I haven't tossed a music video up in two weeks despite promising to do more of that. So here's a two-fer, two versions of "Don't Think Twice." The first is Bob Dylan singing his song in an outtake from the great movie Don't Look Back, so this is 1965, back when Dylan could still sing. The second is Mike Ness (Social Distortion) covering Dylan's song with his country-punk band back when he was doing his solo thing in the late-1990s and was on "Late Night."

Why this song? I have loved this song since I first heard it when I was 17. The Dylan version still freaks me out. And "Don't Think Twice" is such a tasty metaphor outside of the song's subject matter. And, Mike Ness is one of the few who's done a successful cover of the song--and I think it's better, but different, than the original. Hell, even Dylan's more recent performances of this song are lame.

But once he was the legend that was Dylan:

You know I just recently watched the two part documentary on Dylan called No Direction Home. Man, it was fascinating and nostalgic. That guy was, maybe still is, a genius and sure marched to his own drummer. Great song -- but hope there's no hidden farewell message in there, Philip -- we want you to stay. Step up the giving folks.

Hang in there Mrs. Lot! I think this Mike Ness guy sounds kind of like Eddie Vedder in the throes of Cymbalta withdrawal. I hope he sticks with that lead guitarist, though...

I do love a bit of Dylan. Who can honestly say they don't? He's always seem mature beyond his age.

And he's a man who's had a psychospiritual crisis or three. His tunes should be played as therapeutic background music in psych wards.

I'm especially fond of Nashville Skyline Rag, a very upheat instrumental track from Nashville Skyline, perhaps the best of his less well known albums.
