Winter Fundraiser, Day Four

Yesterday another $10 came in via PayPal which I appreciate. That brings the total for the first three days of the fundraiser to $200. Some other contributions are headed my way via snail mail, but I won't know what they are until they get here.

Don't take the following as me bitching, but please understand it as my being totally honest with readers. Here's the short version: If this fundraiser doesn't bring in at least $2,000 by the end of next week, then I will significantly scale back my work here. I'll have little choice. I have put my professional life on hold for over a year now in order to make sure that readers who are interested in mental health issues had a place to go every day instead of relying on the when-they-get-around-to-it coverage of the mainstream media and the delusional opinions of the likes of Judith Warner, Fuller Torrey and NAMI National.

If you aren't down with Warner's nonsense, then please consider contributing $10, $15 or $25 to my work here. I know intimately that the economy is very weird out there right now and that times are tight, but small contributions from the many thousands of readers this site has (February became a record hits month for this site late yesterday) can add up very quickly. I need you all to pull together and give what you can to make this happen.

Unless you think Judith Warner's vision of an America where every child is medicated simply for being a child and every adult is pressed to take medications that we know don't work well and have untoward side effects is what you want. I don't want to live in Warner's world. I bet you don't either.

So please give what you can. Large, small and in-between. The PayPal button is on the right. Or you can email me for a snail mail address.

Thanks for your support.

Hi Phil,

I've been coming to read your blogs over the last few weeks since hearing about your site from the 'all in the mind' radio show on radio national in australia. I've learnt a lot and have been checking in regularly. Would be a real pity if you stopped. A much needed site, and i've particularly liked being able to insert more knowledge into discussions with friends, family and colleagues about these issues.

Thanks very much

Taking Judith Warner's vision for America down along with Fuller Torrey's is worth giving up at least 2 grande nonfat iced mochas from Starbucks!and hitting PayPal with 10 bucks!

Support this site, please. We all need it.

Phil,

Have you considered signing up to be an Amazon.com affiliate? I've found it helps fund my site much better than Google ads. Not only can you choose what products you endorse and recommend to your readers (unlike Google ads with their snake oil salesmen. I'm thinking of removing them entirely from my site)

It doesn't bring in a lot of money, but every bit helps. It's potential increases obviously with your readership. I especially like the fact that the books I recommend are helpful to my readers.

BTW, I've been enjoying your coverage lately of the recent British findings on anti-depressant efficacy. I blogged about it today if you are interested.

I'd certainly like to read your feedback on it.

Philip, I second getting an Amazon portal, I buy groceries and clothes and books and music from Amazon, and end up donating about 10 dollars a month to the blogger BartCop just by going through his portal when I make my purchases. It feels good, I don't lose any money and he gets four cents for every dollar spent. Given a solid readership and the ubiquity of Amazon shopping I imagine that adds up pretty quick.

FP makes a good point, many ppl shop via amazon, i've done it when receiving amazon e-gift cards.i think it's a good idea, and you can choose the books, like Barber's etc.

Yeah, I'm an Amazon shopper also.

Just to get you started: I'm reading a book so good I'm going to buy a paperback copy to loan out. It's called "The Not So Big Life" by Sarah Susanka. She's an architect who wrote a book called "The Not So Big House"--about houses two and three times the size of the one in which I live. Clearly, I was not in her demographic!

But I got this book out of the library and am delighted with it. She uses the concept of building a home as a metaphor for building or remodeling your life. It's well written, clear in its intent and flies in the face of our sick culture. She talks about noticing what's working in your life, removing what doesn't and building something much more satisfying.

One of the things I really like about this book is that it hits on so many of my issues--without medicalizing it or making my struggles be all about fixing what's wrong with me. It's nice to be able to make my life better without having to be a "mental patient" all the time.

Anyway, I'd buy this book through your site for sure if you were doing that Amazon thing. I always used to get a chuckle out of the funky drug ads on your blog. Of course, I guess they noticed how "dangerous" you are to the advertisers. Instead of fixing their algorithims, they just labeled you "dangerous" (or whatever, I can't remember the word they used to describe your effect on the advertisers, but it was negative).

Yours in dangerousness,
Sherry (off to make another small payment on what I think of as my Furious Seasons subscription)
