February 06, 2008Britney Spears Drugged By ManagerThe swirl of news around Britney Spears has gone from weird to weirder still, according to news accounts of a move by the singer's father to get a restraining order against her new manager. Spears, who allegedly has bipolar disorder, has had her stay in the psych unit at the UCLA Medical Center extended beyond 72 hours and it seems like this may be more about getting her away from madness at home than in an attempt to treat Spears. According to the press accounts, Spears was being drugged with Seroquel and Risperdal and was appearing groggy and sleepy. Apparently, her manager was grinding up the pills and sticking them in her food. Whatever one thinks of anti-psychotics, that's simply bizarre. Allegedly, her manager was trying to get her into a coma so that "her doctor could give her drugs to heal her brain." Whatever the hell that means. The singer was reportedly also being given Adderall, an ADHD drug that's not exactly the healthiest thing to give someone diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Anyway, stay tuned for more...because there is bound to be more to this story. Posted by Philip Dawdy at February 6, 2008 12:01 AM

Unbelievable. Thats a paranoids worst dream, people are putting something in the (my) food. Posted by: mark p.s. at February 6, 2008 05:13 AMGuess that kind of puts a rest to the story that she was refusing to take her medication, the story which by the way is apparently the one under which she's being held and apparently deteriorating. I fear for her because no one involved has any incentive to let her out. Her father gets to live it up while she's in the hospital, she can't even authorize paying a lawyer to help her though it's reported she wants too, and if her health insurance runs out, the hospital knows it can bill 40 million bucks worth of "treatment." That's a lot of restraints, seroquel and risperdal. Unless of course her dad blows the money, which legally would be a not insurmountable challenge for him. If she survives, it may well be because of her fans. People are hopefully not going to forget about her before she gets out. Posted by: Sally at February 6, 2008 07:21 AMThis is sounding far too much like Anna Nicole. Grinding up meds into the food? is the guy in jail? we can talk civil liberties and forced medicating all we want, then we come to this form. That manager could have killed her with those drugs, this is unbelievable. I think this is one time people can be relieved parents jumped in and removed her from that disaster, it saved her life. [unlike Anna Nicole]. Posted by: Stephany at February 6, 2008 08:07 AMStephany, In the account I read, it was her mother who released the statement that the manager had been drugging her, causing me to wonder if her mother realized exactly where Britney was going, exactly how similar it would be to the situation at home (assuming the information we are getting is good, this is Hollywood after all), i.e. now she's taking the same drugs and also being controlled and imprisoned. People who haven't been through such a situaion, like, I assume, Britney's mother might assume that some kind of therapy is taking place and really be well intentioned when to me it seems like more of an out of the fire into the frying pan situation. I wonder if her mother didn't realize that and that her realization may have had something to do with the judge giving the conservatorship to her absent, estranged father. Seroquel and Risperdal together? That's certainly a step-up from the Paxil, Xanax and Ambien that was reported earlier. Oh my! I really do fear for this young woman whatever I think of her talent. This is already a disaster but it could get significantly worse in a hurry. I'm about at the point where I wish Tom Cruise was a good friend of hers although I appreciate some of you commenters pointing out to me the rather dark side of Scientology (aliens from space? I had no idea!) Posted by: Sara at February 6, 2008 11:33 AMI think all speculation about Britney should STOP. It doesn't seem like anyone making reports about her are particularly trustworthy. We really do not know anything reliable about the woman. Her privacy should be considered and the tragedy that is happening should be stopped. She is being treated against her will. I call that a human rights violation. And Sara, aliens or not, I think Tom Cruise might actually be able to help (not that I think it will happen--just that I share the sentiment.) One thing I'm quite sure about and willing to speculate about is that she is not being offered safe alternatives to drugs that kill. Every religion that I can think of believes something bizarre. EVERY ONE. The ones we're used to simply believe bizarre things we're used to hearing about---like a virgin birth and raising from the dead---is that really so much stranger than aliens?? For the record, I'm not a scientologist. I just think all religions have a certain amount of the difficult to believe about them---that is the nature of faith and the nature of religion. I was a religious studies major. Posted by: Gianna at February 6, 2008 01:08 PMhere's the thing gianna: i partly agree with you, but this recent report was based on a court filing, which means the ppl making the filing are asserting that it is truthful info. given spears prominence, it's news. given what the manager is allegedly doing, it's def news. Posted by: Philip Dawdy at February 6, 2008 01:31 PM"aliens form space" you mean the creation of the world fable. Tell me if the earth didn't exist before the christian god created it, does that not make god an alien life form? Looks like Scientology called that one right then. All that bashing is one religion attacking another religion for have a similar fable but slightly different from theirs so they're claiming the other are crackpots. If you take any religious text out of context for what the story is to imply, lessons to be learn and/or connection/spirituality from rituals and it looks bad. How about communion? That vampire (drink of my blood) and zombie (eat of my flesh) for immortality crap. I can keep going and use any religion but that's enough to make the point. No need to bash and offend. No ones beliefs are infallible. Scientology gets attacked because all other religions are cults. Ever notice the same type of crap between baptists and the catholics or maybe christians and muslims? Each religion jumps up and don't clutching images of the other's members being happy and rejoicing and pronouncing their faith and greatness as sign of mental imbalance.
The manager being a bad person is double edge cliche`. Many mangers are responsible for wrangling an artist that is not controllable and more likely do they exact opposite of what you want them to do. Managers swindle artists wealth and trust but so do families. Artists are not grounded well to begin with and have money management and denying yourself pleasure are always an issue. Managers giving drugs isn't always for the bad. They may give a performer so coke to sober after consuming to much alcohol so they can perform. Sometimes the drugs are used for fun and others to ease the pain from a life that keeps you removed from having normal activities. Or does having to hole up in a hotel because you can't simply go out(without it being a big production )and eat produce positive results
The worst part is no matter what the dad does to her money he and the court that gave him that right will not be able to be brought to justice and true accountability for their mis actions. At least her so called shrink has been keeping her mouth shut. Wonder how long before those curious medical center employees start raiding her files and notes and they accidentally(if anonymous how did you pay them again but I digress) get released in the media. Then she'll have these f'uped shrink opinions crusaded as fact against her when the diagnosed are what ever disease the quack had on their mind more than any real problem. They'll have the dsm checklist and not saying how every little behavior(Moral and historical based opinion of what's acceptable) is just farther proof of a so called mental disorder. Any statement of I'll do this to her said as a threat or intimidation is more shooting off the mouth than any actual intent. People around the entertainment industry are usually passionate and their wording gets them in trouble when their is no real crime. Who hasn't said something in the heat of the moment with someone you dislike trying to hurt(or perceived to ) someone you love? Posted by: anonymus at February 6, 2008 01:33 PMThat was my point really -- that Tom Cruise would be of more help than anyone else seems to be right now. And I agree aliens from space is really not a lot more bizarre than a lot of other myths that exist in popular religions, but still I didn't know until recently that that was part of the schema in Scientology. And maybe we are speculating to some extent but let's face it I think what's happening to Britney is news and that this might be an opportunity to raise awareness and also maybe someone close to her will actually read about some alternative points of view and decide to act on it. This isn't just exploiting her; this is trying to put some perspective on it that is sorely needed. Posted by: Sara at February 6, 2008 02:00 PMI hear you Philip...I'm just sickened for the poor little human being who happens to be famous caught up in the whole damn thing. It burns close to home, unfortunately. The whole forced treatment thing...and then being humiliated in front of millions. It wasn't millions for me but it was dozens, even a couple hundred maybe...I lived in a large co-op and everyone was in everyones business. There is nothing more humiliating than what Britney is going through. I identify with her--maybe that's stupid, but I do. It hurts everytime I read more about her and I just wish it could be private for her sake. Posted by: Gianna at February 6, 2008 02:36 PMoh and Sara I took Risperdal and Seroquel together...prescribed by a physician and "voluntarily" swallowed all at once. I knew no better. It was a god-awful soul numbing combo--I can tell you that! Posted by: Gianna at February 6, 2008 02:50 PMsince you posted this story, she was released from the hospital. Lets hope she is on the way to recovery.
Gianna, I understand your point and I fear for Britney too, but I fear that without a public keeping up with what is happening to her, Britney would be so isolated she would never be allowed out as everyone involved, doctors, lawyers, hospitals and family profit from her continued incarceration. She's not allowed any contact with anyone her father, or I suppose the doctor the judge appointed to her case, allows. And, while it's tragic for her, I think there's a slight negative backlash to her treatment and to the labeling of her behavior as bipolar. But hey, good news, I just googled Britney and discovered she was apparently released. I hope and pray she'll be okay. http://www.accessatlanta.com/news/content/shared-gen/ap/Recordings/Britney_Spears.html
