Anti-Depressants Get Suicidality Warnings In The UK

Four years after the US made a similar move, the MHRA has announced it will order companies making anti-depressants for the UK market to put warnings on their drugs advising patients and doctors of risks of suicide and suicidality associated with the use of anti-depressants in some people. Much like the American warning, the UK warning will only cover people under the age of 25-years-old. Apparently, these risks magically disappear as soon as one can rent a car. No idea if there is a connection or not!

Much of the credit for this long-needed move by the MHRA must go to the various Seroxat (Paxil) user groups and blogs in the UK who have all really kept up the pressure on the MHRA and Glaxo itself. Good work guys.

One step forward... two steps back Phil!

To suggest that it's fine and dandy to take if you are 25 or under smacks of total ignorance.

The MHRA are incompetent fools who are safeguarding pharma profit and NOT the British public.

Hmmmm. I experienced suicidal ideations within 48 hours of taking fluoxetine, a side effect which miraculously went away within 48 hours of canning the drugs. Civil cases have been won (Tobin v SKB, for example), on the basis that these drugs DO cause the very extreme side effects that we're familiar with, and that they cause them in people who are much older than 25.

The MHRA has dropped the ball, again. Or, rather, it lobbed a gentle catch to the opposition.

"To suggest that it's fine and dandy to take if you are 25 or under smacks of total ignorance."

That's what I was thinking this entire time re: black box warnings for SSRI's. It's about age 25 when word has it the brain stops growing, as in let's assault the growing child-teen-early 20 something with chemicals then once it's done maturing see what we have left.

It really should be the other way around, do not take these drugs UNLESS you are 25 or older, can make a good judgement on how they make you feel, and basically place in to plan a law such as age 21 drinking alcohol age.

We protect kids under 21 with a law for their health safety more than chemicals that are far more dangerous than beer.
