Fox News Takes On Anti-Depressants And Violence Connection

Last night, Fox News ran a piece on the "Hannity's America" program, exploring links between violent behavior among teens on anti-depressants. It goes all the way back to Columbine and Kip Kinkel in Oregon. A mother describes how her son basically turned into a monster while coming off of Paxil, and Dr. Peter Breggin lends some medical expertise to the whole affair (I think he understates the risk of suicidality with anti-depressants, but I bet he was being conservative for TV). Other than that, I'll let the piece speak for itself, except to note that this is the first time in ages that I've seen a major TV network take this problem on in an aggressive fashion.

Yay!! Thanks for this! Fox has done similar smaller pieces making the same suggestions. For a news station that I otherwise can't stand they are being brave leaders with this topic. Unfortunately liberals are likely to dismiss this information simply because it comes from Fox.

Yes indeed Yay yay yay Hannity even if it's Hannity, even if it's the right. The truth is these drugs don't work. The show even gets it right about Cho...this is a different (r)ight from the TAC right, I hope. Or sadly, is TAC/NAMI what the left has disintegrated into?

Still good stuff. Lots of parents pay attention to Hannity.

Actually this is a really good piece because of the focus on an individual story that demonstrates just how bizarre behavior can become on an antidepressant. And I'd just let you all know that my jaw dropped when I heard what dosage of Paxil Ryan Yorke was on -- how many of you caught that? 50mg of Paxil -- that is one hefty dose of Paxil for a teen-age boy. And then the doc tells him to go down by half on the first taper! I'm telling you these doctors know absolutely nothing -- it is truly criminal. No wonder we've got rampage shootings escalating exponentially. Thanks so much to the Fox investigative reporter for including these telling details.

hey when they had my 13 yr old ramped up on 150mg of zoloft[2001], they stopped it cold turkey, and needless to say, she almost jumped from my car on the freeway ---door wide open--. that stuff drove her into a zone i never want to see again, i can say that from experience. [not to mention she was 13 and it was approved for 18 and older back then]. oh, and she didn't have a dx of depression.

I am very surprised this was televised by Fox. Great news report.

There is published scientific evidence going back to the early 1990s showing that Prozac (fluoxetine) is associated with violent deaths.

Forensic Science International 1993 – Frankenfield et al.

This study reaches the conclusion that “violent methods were more often associated with fluoxetine suicides than with TCA suicides.” (65% v 23%).
