Brit Patients Sue Over Paxil/Seroxat Withdrawal Problems

I think this lawsuit may be a first over withdrawal problems from a licensed drug: 600 British patients have filed a lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline, makers of Paxil (Seroxat in the UK), alleging that the company issued no warning of withdrawal problems with the drug and that the drug in a defective product under British consumer protection laws. The suit seeks about $60 million in damages. Good for these patients for stepping up and suing GSK over Paxil's notorious withdrawal problems.

For those of you who might think that it's not possible for someone to take an anti-depressant and wind up hooked on the drug, take a look at this site. For those of you who take Paxil, be very, very careful when you decide to discontinue use of the drug.

I think this is an excellent example that others should follow.

I wonder why there were only 600 clients when it was very much the case that the "Online Seroxat Support Group" & "seroxatUSERSgroup" claimed they represented 10.000 + members.

see-

I note that both Derek Scott of OSSG & Janice Simmons of sUg both attended the EMEA meeting of April 2004

The reason why there are only 600 or so claimaints left in the UK Seroxat class action against GSK is because many cases were dropped because of doctors prescribing other drugs in conjunction with Seroxat. I know personally of many people who have been dropped from the class action because of this and other factors...

Oh and by the way, Janice Simmons of the seroxatusersgroup met with UK prime minister Gordon Brown at downing street a few days ago. Bear in mind that there is currently a 4 year long investigation into the conduct of GSK regarding Seroxat prescribing to children/suppression of negative clinical data etc..

http://fiddaman.blogspot.com/2007/11/honourable-members.html

But bear in mind also that JP Garnier( GSK CEO) is also on "Gordon Browns Business Council"...
Also worthy of thought is what GSK means to the UK economy..
It is virtually an English institution with its roots firmly cemented in UK research/developement/sponsorship/employment etc..
It is the UK's Major Pharma Cash Cow..
And it is prized very much as being such...

Will be interesting when more info on this meeting begins to bear fruit...
But i have a feeling that the UK seroxat scandal is a can of worms which has been eating its way right through the core of UK politics for quite some time now...
And when something has become that rotten..
Most people won't touch it...

PM’s drugs vow (MHRA Investigation into GSK)

DRUGS giant GlaxoSmithKline will be prosecuted if an investigation finds the company withheld information that the drug Seroxat has a higher suicide risk for under 18s.

This promise was made by Gordon Brown on Thursday at a Downing Street meeting with a campaigner from Huntingdon.

Janice Simmons, founder of the Seroxat User Group, wants to see the drug banned and patients trying to come off it given more help.

The PM stressed the investigation by the Department of Health, which has been going on for four years, was a serious inquiry.

The drugs company denies the allegation, saying Seroxat was never licensed for children.

Mrs Simmons told The Hunts Post: "Mr Brown said doctors were required to monitor patients once they are prescribed anti-depressants, but I told him that many GPs do not know what they are monitoring for. They don't understand the danger points."

Mrs Simmons, 58, from Great Stukeley, met Mr Brown along with the Huntingdon MP Jonathan Djanogly and Dr Paul Duckett from Manchester University.

She set up her group in 2002 after discovering her second husband, Jon, was addicted to anti-depressants.

I have been haunted by the demon of my father having killed my mother and then commiting suicide. My father never hurt anyone in his life and the only thing that changed was that he was on Seroxat. I want GSK to tell me how I tell my children how such a kind man could do such a thing. Can GSK tell me why their billion pound drug robbed my children of their grandmother. They knew something was wrong and they continue to make money while I spend every day wondering what might have been if he had never taken these cursed tablets.

Court sets deadline for compensation claims.

Have you had difficulties withdrawing from the anti-depressant drug Seroxat?
Have you found it impossible to withdraw from it? Are you having difficulties in withdrawing from Seroxat now?

The High Court made a Group Litigation Order in relation to the Group Action brought by around 500 individuals alleging harm from problems withdrawing from Seroxat.

On 19 May 2009 the High Court ordered that any individual who wishes to pursue a compensation claim must join the Group Action before 15 January 2010.

All individuals must have their claim investigated before they can join the action and so they need to come forward ASAP.

Register your interest now, call the Seroxat team at Hugh James, designated as lead solicitors for the purposes of the Group Litigation Order, on 02920 785 971 or go to www.hughjames.com/seroxat

The Group Register will close on 15 January 2010 and any individuals who have not joined at that date may lose their opportunity to be part of the litigation.

You should not stop taking any medication without consulting your doctor
