A Small Annoucement

In addition to the lecture I am doing at the New College of Florida on Nov. 27, I am now also doing a "talk" (er, informal lecture) for honors students at the University of Washington on Dec. 5. I'll be talking about consensus, controversies and chaos in the world of mental health. More on this later.

Hey.

I was referred here earlier today, I have been perusing the posts and articles, all brilliant, espesh the writing but that is to be expected right?

You seem like a great person to be giving a talk on the subject, perhaps a transcript. By a stange coincidence I too am giving a little talk on Dec fifth about self harm and the NHS.

Bon chance

Here's a link to a book by a former ER psychiatrist criticizing the modern ways of psychiatric treatments. I believe that the book's title "Doing Psychiatry Wrong," published by influential Analytic Press, will appeal to the creator and the readers of this blog. I found the book buried among the thousands of e-books on the internet. The link is below. The book is under 150 pages and is in the .pdf format.

Sorry, Phil, I seem to be bombarding you with stuff, today. I just came across this (via a link on Uncommon Knowledge), which I thought was quite interesting:

http://www.healthypages.co.uk/newsitem.php?news=5652

I've 'mailed the link to Fidders, The Truthman, Aubrey Blumsohn and that anonymous fellow who runs Seroxat Secrets, amongst others, and asked Aubrey if he can lay his hands on the paper. I suppose the question is "how is it that the written word can impact on depression?" Actually, that's not really a very interesting question, because the answer is that words are just an extension of thought, so if one says the right things, one ought to be able to alleviate depression, logically (assuming that that's what depression is about, naturally!).

"consensus, controversies and chaos in the world of mental health" -- how long do you have? That's taking on quite a challenge. Take plenty of water -- you might get hoarse. JK :)
