October 05, 2007Lilly Updates Zyprexa LabelI cannot put this any better or get at the irony--if irony is possible when it comes to Eli Lilly--any more acutely than does Pharmalot: "Interesting timing. The drugmaker will include new warnings for weight gain, elevated cholesterol and hyperglycemia. This comes just as Lilly is seeking FDA approval to market the antipsychotic to teens. Then there are those mounting lawsuits filed by various states that accuse the drugmaker of improperly marketing Zyprexa because side effects--weight gain and diabetes--allegedy weren’t disclosed properly." Isn't this move by Lilly 10 years and at least 1,000 deaths too late? Alex Berenson at the New York Times has all manner of fun with Lilly's announcement as well. Have I missed something? Why would you have zyprexa ads running on your site? Posted by: Jane at October 5, 2007 06:17 PMI remember back in 2003 when the three front page articles covered Zyprexa and how it was the most lethal, etc., Lilly claimed that it did have a warning on its label. What it had, in the tiniest print and at the very bottom of a long list, was the word hyperglycemia. Who would have noticed this or known what it was, and what doctor ever brought it up back then. If we had known about hyperglycemia , weight gain, been given regular blood glucose tests, my son's life would have been saved. Posted by: Ellen Liversidge at October 6, 2007 05:58 AMThe reason this label change makes me sick, is the irony of it coming out with this APJ study: the authors are important, the conclusion in the study is basically a warning for Zyprexa label, that has come into the peer reviewed journal, and why it's absurd, is this information was buried by Lilly--and now it's wrapped up nice and tidy in a peer reviewed journal, authored by key players in the Harvard group, and added to the label for warning, is a smack in the face to all people who suffered these side effects long before 2007. There woundn't have to be a label change at all if Lilly was honest and didn't hide what they knew from the general public. My daughter gained an unnecessary 50 lbs, had blood sugar spikes, it was horrible back in 1999 and as in the interview here with Ellen who lost her son--that is unacceptable, and more unacceptable is Lilly pushing this drug for further use in kids and adults. NAMI's December 1, 1997 Press Release: New Atypical Antipsychotic Drugs Recommended As First-line Medications For People With Serious Brain Disorders http://www.nami.org/Content/ContentGroups/Press_Room1/19971/December_1997/New_Antipsychotic_Drugs_As_First-line_Treatment.htm Posted by: Joe at October 6, 2007 03:15 PMYou may find it interesting to see what Lilly and the FDA had to say about this drug in the first (that I know of ) newspaper article about its lethal effects. Go or AHRP.ORG archives before 1996 and punch in Zyprexa. It was written by Tim Wheeler of the Baltimore Sun,March 20, 2003. Sample: Dr. Robert Baker, Lilly senior clinical research physysican says the evidence is "not persuasive." "The Zyprexa label does mention that both diabetes and hyperglycemia were reported during clinical trials of the drug."....'They are listed among hundreds of 'infrequent' adverse events reported.' Marni Lemons "No one has yet proved any causality." FDA's Susan Cruzan said the agency did not see any affirmative evidence. Lemons disapproved of Japan's requiring a warning on the drug ...."has the potential to misinform patients and their caregivers, causing them to cease taking their medication. So, even then, it was all about the bottom line. Posted by: Ellen Liversidge at October 8, 2007 07:51 AMPost a comment
