Coming Off Meds Guide Released

The Icarus Project and the Freedom Center have just released a guide to coming off meds, based upon harm reduction principles. Here's a link to the guide. I haven't had a chance to review it myself, so let me know what you all think of it. And, yes, it was created in consultation with doctors.

I've downloaded it, read it, and link to it on my site. It's a good start. But that's all. Much much more work needs to be done once you get the basic outline it gives. It only talks about lifestyle changes, exercise and diet and nutrition in vague terms---again a good start---but you have to take on the research to learn what diet, nutrition, exercise, meditation etc is right for you. My website has many other alternative resources on my "About" page. Another good place to start.

Philip, I want your opinion related to the central question of this piece: Do you think anyone should be able to stop taking meds against the wishes of the doctor?
This document suggests 1) making a case to your doctor as to why you should go off and if that doesn't work, 2) either switch doctors or go ahead without telling the doctor.

What do you think?

the "wishes" of the doctor? what about consumer self-determination and the right to make our own choices. Doctors don't always know best. That being said it's incredibly helpful to have a cooperative doctor and thank god I do.

My oldest daughter is on Lamictal for BP2. The doc had her on Geodon as well, and she didn't like how she felt on it, along with double vision. Her pdoc discouraged her to remove it, so she did it on her own, in small 1/4 breakdowns of doses over many weeks of time, [with my encouragement] and once she was completely off of the Geodon her doctor remarked she appeared much better, and maybe she should start the removal process. She told him, she already did it. Which was why she felt/appeared better. She took control, worked cautiously, remained in her DBT group/ Bipolar support group, and is a role model for a 20something being proactive in self-care. She feels great on Lamictal stand alone, and with all of the add on therapies has done a 360 from self-destructive behaviors. Because she took charge of herself.
