Owen Wilson

I'm not much for entertainment news even when it does intersect mental health issues. Celebrities are the most overdone, least-important, most-read corner of the media, both new and old. I just cannot get very interested in the bipolar rumors around Britney Spears because it's all just so much vapid speculation. (If she has bipolar disorder, she also has millions of dollars. She'll be just fine. You heard it here first.)

But suicide changes my usual disinterest. Over the weekend, Owen WIlson--a fine actor and, from what I've read, a fairly level guy--tried to kill himself in Santa Monica. Press accounts indicate that he tried to overdose on pills and slit his wrists, and someone called 911 and the paramedics got to the actor's home in time and things worked out as well as these things can work out. Apparently, Wilson has a history of depression and had just had a blowout fight with a close friend. He's in a hospital now.

Wilson issued a statement asking for privacy. He likely won't get much. He's a public figure and the entertainment media and blogs will chew him up and get into his life until Britney goes and does something stupid.

I have nothing special to say about Wilson's situation. Of course, I always scratch my head about how someone with talent, looks, money, and women falling off him would want to off himself. But, then, billionaires have killed themselves. Depression and suicidality and human psychology play games with people of every stripe. As we saw earlier this year with Richard Jeni and Brad Delp.

If Britney Spears has "bipolar" it's because it's been induced by the antidepressants and assorted other psychotropic drugs she's been given. What she really needs to do is withdraw slowly and properly from what has been reported to be a real cocktail of drugs, including that most deadly of antidepressants Paxil. Until she does we're going to keep hearing about some pretty bizarre behavior. I'm not a fan but I do think it's very sad that she's being medicated to the hilt and in jeopardy of losing her kids and her sanity. As for Owen sounds like he's being "treated" if he has a "history of depression" (that's code for "taking antidepressants") -- and I'm willing to bet they had something to do with this attempt.

If you are really suicidal, I suggest going to a third world country and build some infrastructure such as a school or hospital or water and sewage for a small village first. Then see how you feel.

I think the good point you make here is that happiness or mental wellness cannot happen just because someone has fame, fortune, love or careers. The article talks about how everyone appears to be shocked in the neighborhood. That happens. People who are depressed or other--most of the time are quite good at facades. Being that he was a comic actor, explains that even more. What I've discovered is that the false image we present to society masks what sometimes is a desperate need. I was glad to see he has some actor friends coming round the hospital, but the answer really remains within the person. I've lost a few people I knew to suicide and I can say I was shocked, when a successful business man, and devoted father shot himself in the head. It has nothing to do with what people "leave behind". It's about that person, right then, at that minute. Then it leaves others to ponder "why". Some might think what a relief Owen didn't die. I would like to know what Owen thinks about how he in fact lived. He might not have wanted to achieve that goal. There, is where and the reason why the media and his friends need to leave him alone. He needs to know his "why" and "how come" before anyone else tries to figure it out.
I've met[not recently, but in the state hospital a while back] a millionaire...lost all of his money. To him, he had nothing left of "self". Sometimes the image of one's self is caught up in the society images. Cars, money, women, careers--when in fact that has nothing to do with real happiness or sense of self. Owen has a long road ahead of him, and he joins many others doesnt he? we are all on the same path. We just appear different on the outside.

As I said in an earlier comment a few months ago, if Britney is "bipolar", it is almost certainly substance induced. According to Hollywoodscoop.com she was seen taking both Paxil and Xanax. Both of these can lead to mania, drug-induced psychosis and a host of other issues. In recent photos I think she looks dazed and depressed -- and medicated. I don't believe meds are going to help anyone recover from mood swings over the long term. As for Owen, if he has a "history of depression" that is as good as saying he's being treated with antidepressants and maybe he's on tranquilizers or sleeping pills too like so many other celebrities. We don't know, but anytime there's a suicide attempt that looks impulsive and out of character, there's a good chance that prescription drugs have played an influential role. I think he's lucky he didn't succeed.

I knew they were going to start calling Brittany "bipolar." I feel for Brittany. This is short hand for, she's about to lose custody of her children. Bipolar is the diagnosis de jour for everyone, with the famous on the frontline, sort of like alcoholic used to be. Once you get that label, as we know, you are drugged in a way that causes much misery. I can see where being a grown woman and mother who has the breakup of a marriage after years of child stardom and being in the public eye might have a spiritual crisis. Labeling such as "bipolar" is appalling. Owen, on the other hand, I don't know much about. Used to be us humans understood how amassing great wealth and fortune could cause a spiritual crisis. He seems like a smart kid. I'm glad he survived the suicide attempt and hope he doesn't buy into the psych labeling.

Hi F.S. readers, Just wanted to apologize for having two similar comments but apparently they got forwarded to spam because they included brand names of certain drugs I'm not too fond of so I resubmitted. Now "Junk" is the right place for those drugs but not for my comments! You can see that I made a transition to being more temperate after 24 hours. And I feel sorry for Britney too to be honest. I think she might lose custody of her kids and as long as she is drugged up this might be a good thing but overall it's still sad.

The thing with Britney losing her kids to the father's custody, I think in the end the kids lose all the way around because they have been thrown into the media frenzy as their mother fell apart within the public view holding cameras. The way my life has been of late would be a disaster if I was being photographed while people screamed my name and blocked me from getting to my car etc. I'm pretty sure I would have taken out a camera crew by now. In the Britney situation it would be best if someone took the kids and let them grow up on a farm or something away from their parents crap. The first thing I would have done would have been to get the kids out of the camera's view and most likely taken myself to a remote place, like Britney and her EX can afford to do. But, again it's all just my opinion.
