I've Gone Commercial

As we used to say about bands in the 70's and 80's--"Nazareth is so commercial now, dude! How can you listen to them?"--will perhaps now be said about me. I have just pasted Google ads on this site. I am not sold on their location--so offer suggestions--but for the moment I am going to leave them on the right. I haven't the faintest idea how much revenue these ads will generate--not a lot is my guess--but I want to see for myself.

The PayPal button continues on the top right, of course.

I've made my own peace, since Google ads on political blogs can be an unending source of amusement and WTF conversation. Things are about to get real interesting around here.

Next year, I am going to apply to the Northwestern University Medill Academy for Alternative Journalism, a summer program for rising seniors. Thanks to Philip (!!!) I am SO interested in alternative journalism, and really want to pursue that field. I want to be just like Philip. Anyway, the program only takes 10 out of 300 applicants, so over the next year or so, I am going to try to do everything to beef up my resume -- apply to competitions, scholarships and internships, as well as do plenty of freelance writing (I already got a nice portfolio going!) See, Philip is the most accomplished and savvy person I know (even though he won't return my emails, birthday cards or phone calls! Grrrrr!) and I want to be just like him. And, by the way, getting off that damn Clozeril has been the best thing since sliced bread!!!

You should put up a Google advertisement for the UW Honors Program!!!

it's like when FOB went from the showbox to the tacoma dome. But leave the ads. You gotta make a living.and that NW research ad that shows up in my time zone pays 50 bucks a week.

Pennies a year and they get pretty boring fairly fast. Bipolar Books, Bipolar Watches, Towels With Bipolar Stitched Into The Edge, Bipolar Team Jackets... whould it kill Google to put up an ad for an Elmore Leonard novel once in a while?

Don't worry. You haven't "sold out" quite yet, in my opinion. Leave them up and see what happens. So do you get money if I click on the ads? How about if a spend a day just clicking away? Would that make you rich, and what's my cut?

The top ad I'm seeing is 2 Fast 2 Furious Tones...complimentary movie ringtones. Several of the Basset Rescue sites use the ads, nothing wrong with it.

I don't see it as selling out. I see it as very savvy, and trying to put food on the table to support those two beautiful felines, and to have the resources to write write write.

If they cannot get a modeling contract for Friskies, you have to do something, right?

The best writers have all done things to support themselves so they could create masterpieces. Faulkner wrote "Sanctuary" for 5,000, which was a huge sum back then. If he didn't write that, could he have had the means to write "Sound and Fury?

Both Fitzgerald and Isherwood wrote screenplays in Hollywood during the 30s and hated it. But Fitz did it for his wife, as well.

Keep on blogging!

I think the ads are very tactfully placed. I didn't even notice them until you pointed them out. No worries.

How about for position you put a permanent heading just above: "Find your bipolar disease-mongerers here:"?

Posted by: peter at August 19, 2007 03:56 AM

At least at the present time, the ads are not topical at all. Fast and furious dvds, dove hunts... Hope it improves.

The ads appear relevant to the post topic is what I've noticed. For instance I see depression cure, a research study local to my area, a bipolar ad, as well as one for PETA.Each time I read a post the ad changes to that post's main topic. So far Ive seen mostly bipolar and depression ads. Not that it matters, just an observation.
