July 09, 2007Shocking NewsThose of you who follow mental health news know that some psychiatrists have been pushing to re-popularize ECT and, in some cases, forced ECT. New York State is particularly aggressive on this front. For example, take the case of Simone D, whom Mindfreedom has started a campaign around. A state hospital patient in New York, the state recently won an appeals court decision allowing it to force her to endure another 30 rounds of ECT. Miss D would prefer not to be shocked. Mindfreedom urges you to write to New York State officials. You can do so by following this link here. In other shocking news, here's a Dutch doctor defending the use of ECT and a reporter who seems to have come under the doc's spell--not even offering any counter-evidence on ECT's use. The piece is filled with enough lies to make President Bush blush. Readers of this blog know that I am passionately against the use of forced ECT. It's torture upon innocent people, plain and simple. As for voluntary ECT, it's your brain. Go ahead have a nice day. But keep in mind what Ernest Hemingway said of ECT: "It put me out of business." Posted by Philip Dawdy at July 9, 2007 12:05 AM

Speaking of ECT I just got an email from an ECT survivor named Sue Clark . She and her husband made some youtube videos, audio is out of sync but they are short in length. I posted the links on my blog. Posted by: Mark(p.s.2) at July 9, 2007 12:28 AMCrazy amplified. A blogger I've been reading for a year or so is undergoing ECT. It is the one "treatment" I truly fear... Necessary post, FS. Thank you. Posted by: mercurial scribe at July 9, 2007 12:53 AMFor anyone still holding out that ECT is good for you see the two below articles: Harold Sackeim Reverses Position Posted by: Gianna at July 9, 2007 07:26 AMthanks for all the info guys. the articles are fascinating as is the crazy tracy blog. if it makes sense, i'll post the youtube videos for tomorrow. Posted by: Philip Dawdy at July 9, 2007 08:40 AMECT was the biggest mistake I made in my adult life. And it destroyed my writing career. I wish I had known about Hemingway before I was convinced to have it by a zealous shrink and a fantastic health insurance policy which covered everything including the shrinks frappicino's. If I had Papa's gun I would eat it. I miss my ability to write more than anything. It was who I was. Now I am nothing. It's living death. Posted by: anonymous at July 9, 2007 10:23 AM18 months ago an influential person in the [Childhood Bipolar Disorder]mental health arena suggested to me to ask my [at the time inpatient]daughter's psychiatrist about ECT. At the time she was appearing medication resistant. I had NO intent on asking for it for her, at all. But out of curiousity I asked the psychiatrist his thoughts on ECT. This is an outrageous, inhumane and barbaric treatment being performed on an innocent person within a psychiatric institution in 2007. Unbelievable. I'm writing my letter. Posted by: Stephany at July 9, 2007 12:19 PM"Creedmoor mandates that two psychiatrists, neither associated with the ECT unit, must certify that a patient lacks the capacity to give informed consent because of impaired mental ability to comprehend the nature of the need for ECT, and they must further certify that the patient does not object." Posted by: Stephany at July 9, 2007 03:47 PMre:anonymous "I would eat it" The second most powerful effect of psychiatry (after physical damage) is the trick of making someone believe they are broken or defective.
Wizard's First Rule People are Stupid "People can be made to believe any lie because they want to believe it is true, or because they are afraid that it is true. Posted by: Mark(p.s.2) at July 10, 2007 08:59 AMI really fear to hear the term ECT, I witness of its horrible affect on my aunt. Treatment is for cure diseases, not for creating other troubles...
