June 01, 2007Docs Find Pediatric Drop In Depression Diagnosis DepressingAn editorial in the new issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry takes on what it sees as a troubling dynamic: a decrease in depression diagnoses in kids following FDA advisories leading to lees use of anti-depressants in kids. "The FDA’s advisories had the well-meaning intent of providing information about the safety of antidepressants in pediatric use, and the agency recommended a black box warning to improve treatment safety. However, these policy actions may have had the unintended effect of discouraging the prescription of antidepressants for pediatric patients and pediatric utilization of antidepressants without compensatory increases in other specific treatments. If so, this may have resulted in the lower rates of diagnosing and treating new-onset pediatric depression seen in this study, which may well have meant that many pediatric patients received less psychiatric treatment than needed, which in turn may be a factor in the increased rates of youth suicide reported in previous epidemiological studies." I'm sure the editorial and accompanying study will be controversial amongst readers. I'm not sure I buy the alleged causal relationship between less use of anti-depressants in kids and a modest bump in suicides among age groups in which suicide isn't particularly prevalent. But that's just me. Posted by Philip Dawdy at June 1, 2007 12:05 AM

Maybe it's because there is less mis-diagnoses happening and doctors finally figured out that anti depressant use in kids was off base, and reckless, without long term efficacy studies in place, and without long term studies in place showing what those meds do to a growing brain. But what do I know. Posted by: Stephany at June 1, 2007 09:54 AMHi Philip. Just read about your blog in "The Trouble with Spikol." It's superb & I'd agree it's one of the most informative mental health blogs of them all. I run a support group for folks w/depression, bipolar disorder & their loved ones out of suburban Philly - we're the largest & best of our kind. Now, for some unknown reason, Philip, I OUTGREW bipolar disorder one, the kind where you go off your frigging rocker. I had it from age 38 till about 58. At 61, I take only 1 mg of Klonopin before bed - that's my med. I NEVER have moodswings anymore. I'm so fortunate, I thank God every day. My former boyfriend, Simon, 67, also is fully recovered & takes no meds at all. A 75-year old female friend is also fully recovered. Recovery happens! Keep up the fantastic work, Phil. I like your sexy black glasses & sweet face. - Ruth Z Deming Posted by: Ruth Deming at June 1, 2007 11:33 AMCan't help but wonder whether the editorial was written by someone with Pharm connections.
