June 04, 2007Black Box Warning In The Offing For Cymbalta?A recent post on CafePharma--where pharma reps often have anonymous conversations about whatever in the pharma world--asked if anyone knew of pending black box warnings coming Cymbalta's way due to reports of liver problems in patients who use the anti-depressant. Someone replied: "I have not heard we were getting close to a "black box" but I have started hearing problems when Cymbalta was used with statins. It seems to trigger rocketing liver enzymes according to a couple of Drs." Lilly issued a Dear Doctor letter regarding liver problems in 2005. Where does depression hurt? Um, maybe in the liver. It will be interesting to see where this leads. For once, it'd be nice if it led someplace warm and cozy. BTW, Cymbalta seems to be very much the "it" anti-depressant all of a sudden. The MySpace bipolar groups are filed with queries about the drug and I heard from a younger friend of mine over the weekend that damn near everyone in her 20something universe seems to have tried the drug. Most psych meds are processed via the liver, and many patients do not realize that they are/can be hypersensitive to any medication/cough syrups/etc. that are processed through Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6). If a person gets genetic testing done, it is easy to find out what medications can react positively or negatively, ultimately giving doctors an edge on prescribing medications that will work for the patient without a lot of trial and error. I feel it is an area not many people have researched, and there are labs that do these blood work ups. IF insurance companies required that for all patients, it would cut costs for all involved, by the trial and error method we currently have for psychiatric medications. If consumers/patients did more research themselves, it isn't hard to figure out what med categories work for them, and why they don't. The medications processed via the liver, are often the ones that give patients the most problems mentally.[as in they don't work, and often cause more harm than good.] Posted by: Stephany at June 4, 2007 07:09 AMAside from this liver stuff, I'd like to take out my soapbox, stand on it, and state that Cymbalta is a pile of crap for other reasons...namely the fact that withdrawing from it can make you want to kill yourself. That's pretty much what I almost did at the end of 2005, and it goes right in line with what happened during the illustrious clinical trials of the drug as well. This medication is crap and should not be offered to ANYONE. Posted by: ariadneK, Ph.D. at June 4, 2007 11:13 PM |
