Texas Teen Commits Suicide After Taking Lexapro

Six weeks after. She was 18-years-old. The link goes right to a streaming video of a newscast. It's a tragic story. Some of you may find the description of how she ended her life to be a bit graphic, so view with caution. Her family will apparently sue, if Texas' legal system doesn't hold them back.

On www.khou.com there is an accompanying article. Telling is the statement:

"The hormones begin raging. You just fascinate [sic] between highs and lows. Typical for most teenagers,” says Kayla’s father, Ray.

But when the highs became higher and the lows lower, a doctor placed Kayla on Lexapro."

Dammit. Dammit. Dammit. This didn't have to happen.

I'm on 200 of Topamax. Anyone else on it?

Gwen, What I remember most about Dopamax was that it diminished my cognitive ability quite a bit and suppressed my appetite.

I don't know...I understand your reluctance to support drugs for depression, but a lot of people who are very depressed report excellent results with a lot of these drugs, and they never got anywhere with anything else. Right now, I'm on 25mg Lexapro for OCD (20mg is supposedly top dose) and all I can say is it's awesome! There are some side effects, but they are not overwhelming, and there are quite a few side effects from the illness anyway.

Hmmm, highs got higher and lows got lower. Manic depression, right? So why are docs still giving bipolars antidepressants? They don't even work for that condition.

Hi Manxome,

Yeah, that's why my doctor prescribed Topomax -- to help suppress my appetite. I gained 20 pounds on clozeril, and it's not making me very happy. Not happy at all. In fact, it's making me quite angry and hateful. I used to be very pretty. I am tall and have a pretty face, and when I was at a lower weight, people would say "you look like a model!" Well, I don't look like a model anymore. Fuck everyone. It's not my fault America puts so much emphasis on god-damn looks. Fuck everyone. Fuck America. It's not my fault I'm not beautiful anymore. America shoudln't put that much emphasis on looks. If people don't like how I look anymore, too bad. All mny friends can go to hell if they think I'm too fat.

i think i need to do a post explaining my views on treatment and what i am trying to do with this here blog. because i am not against using meds. i am against how meds are being used and how patients are being ground up in the process. and there's a difference.

Just a followup. I'm reducing the 25mg Lexapro down to 15mg for a while because it's killed my sex drive like totally. Not that that matters too much these days, but I am concerned that it may not come back (Google PSSD to see what I mean). Damn that side effect is a real killer! But 25mg sure has some great positive effects! It brought back feelings and emotions that I had thought were long gone forever. Stuff was like a miracle drug. But so was Anafranil and I gained 25 lbs on that one.
