Reefer Madness

A new study is out claiming to show how the brain responds to chemicals contained in marijuana and that pot causes psychoses. I'll wait until I have accessed the study itself before saying much, because the media often gets the ideas of "links" and "causes" tangled up. To whit, two headlines on the study:

"Doctors: Pot Triggers Psychotic Symptoms"

"Cannabis chemical 'helps' schizophrenia"

Anyhow, the pot causes schizophrenia stories are back out there. High times indeed.

THC can cause psychosis (paranoia specifically), it can also cause sedation and euphoria.

Like any biochemical that acts on brain receptors it has different effects on different people.

Moreover, as the Brisbane Times article eluded too, it depends on the THC level in the cannabis. The more potent the THC, the more "side effects" are likely. Too kind, eh?

That's why I prefer hashish. Better THC to compound microgram ratio.

I agree with the above commenter, however, new strains of pot are being produced weekly. Some types are much better for pain, some are better for other applications. I know that at the Compassion club, they recommend different types of pot, for different people at different times of the day. Pot for morning and different pot for night.

So, its very hard to generalize, across pots and across individuals. In addition, the modality to get the THC also affects its potency and side effects.

May 5th is Global Marijuana rally. 200 cities across the world are participating..

Cheers

Well I can attest that marijuana causes me to be delusional...psychotic no, but I'm sure it can cause psychosis in some.

On the other hand I once talked to someone with a bipolar diagnosis who treated it with marijuana and claimed it stabilized him. He seemed to be doing alright.

I've never pushed my attitude about illicit drugs on anyone, but I don't hesitate to share that it was these drugs and these drugs alone that got me my bipolar diagnosis to begin with. I don't doubt one bit I would have ever had a hospitalization without the aid of hallucinogenics and marijuana. I've never been psychotic in the absence of their use.

I'll be honest - I have SO wanted to try marijuana and tried to convince my husband to let me smoke it with an acquaintance and he said that it induces depression episodes.

Shoot. So much for that.
