May 11, 200705-11-2007 Media MadnessFirst, I will be guest blogging over at To The People for the next week or so while a couple of the regular bloggers at this Libertarian site are off on vacation and, likely, violating substance control laws and the laws of Nature. My first wee post is here. Looks like the FDA is set to approve an old-wine-in-new-bottles Seroquel next week. Namely, Seroquel XR. I cannot wait to see the press releases and studies on this one, which I have a hunch will be coming out at the APA convention which begins in about a week in San Diego. Ah, the pharma blogosphere is alive with the sounds of anger after the Senate's passage of a new drug safety bill. Peter Rost. PharmaGossip. eDrugSearch has numerous items. (Via CL Psych.) CL Psych has great bit on how the media is screwing up this newfangled subthreshold bipolar disorder nonsense (SBD) and how much of what Eli Lilly did in marketing Zyprexa to PCPs fit right in with SBD. Now, Mother's little helper has a DX all its own. Liz Spikol has thoughts on the SBD business. Depression Introspection on the right to bear arms and the mentally ill. Nothing like extended release nightmares, or extended trainwreck stupor to get ya through the day; and basically don't even think about public speaking. AstraZeneca Pipeline summary, shows uses for Seroquel SR. Such as schizophrenia, bipolar maintenance, bipolar depression, generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar mania...looks like AZ is covering the spectrum. Bifeprunox mesilate, a novel atypical antipsychotic agent, Solvay pipeline 2008, schizophrenia, and bipolar too. On side note regarding new medication coming down the pipeline--this post on my blog has recently been the number 2 search from all over the world. Makes me wonder if something's getting ready to be released into the market. Posted by: Stephany at May 11, 2007 02:49 PMOne of my best friends just got into New York University! I'm so happy for her! You have to understand, this is not a girl who flew through acadmics -- quite on the contrary, schoolw was really, really hard for her. All throughout high school she was in alternative classes and and got mostly Cs. But then she went to community college and worked really really hard, got mostly 4.0s, and, low and behold, was able to pull off getting into an Ivy-League caliber university. Is that not amaazing? It just goes to show, that here in America, if seomtone wnats something really, really bad, they will aventually attain. It's really, really awesome. No one their right mind would have expected this person to get into a school like NYU. My friend rocks the house!!! Posted by: Gwen at May 12, 2007 03:03 PMThat article by Dr. Larkin ("Mind Over Medicine") was very impressive - unfortunately there didn't seem to be a place to leave comments on that page. He echoed some of my own feelings with this passage: "Research has shown that psychotic experiences are essentially normal phenomena that occur on a continuum in the general population. However, traumatic life experience may be the factor that differentiates those who become psychiatric patients and those who do not." Gosh, not trying to be cynical, but ... when does patent protection expire for the regular, old-style Seroquel? Posted by: Francesca Allan at June 6, 2007 10:44 AMEvidently, Seroquel has a few more years before their patent expires. From their manufacturer's website: "SEROQUEL is the number one prescribed atypical antipsychotic in the United States, with global sales of almost $2.8 billion in 2005." So it looks like they're good for another $15 billion or so. Phew!!! Posted by: Francesca Allan at June 6, 2007 10:06 PM |
