That Guy, Part I

I had planned to do a longish post on the Virginia Tech shooter--that guy, as I am calling him--but I am tired and would like to see what other new details trickle in. Clearly, that guy had some very serious issues, his play writing disturbed professors (who've seen it all, I bet), his character unsettled roommates and so on. The New York Times has a decent round up of what's known as of now.

It's clear now that that guy was on meds of some kind or had been in recent months. There's no news on precisely what he took. It's not clear what condition he was being treated for, although the descriptions I have read of his silent ways don't scream bipolar disorder or schizophrenia--both disorders are connected to much more noisome behavior and more of a character (or maybe I am wrong). That guy comes off like a stone wall who talked to no one--I knew guys like this in college--so it'll be interesting to see what comes out on what his diagnosis was, what kind of care he had, what kind of meds he took and so on.

I am going to leave it at that for the moment.

Maybe this is where the phrase cold-blooded killer comes from. I would hope they will be pulling in forensic psychiatric specialists to possibly profile the guy. That will not bring in too many more answers either. I am interested to know if he was on medications; I've seen personalities of people exhibit blank expression, flat emotion due to antidepressant use. Makes me think of the woman who posted the story about her husband in this recent post here about Cymbalta problems.

I'd make a guess at psychotic depression or personality disorder. Similar kind of paranoia and despairing energy, but it's all repressed and stuffed back for fear of other people thinking you're a freak.

He laughed diabolically as he was killing people. I hope people think hard about that in the quest for understanding.

I don't see anything changing here...gun control laws aren't going to change, politicians aren't going to compromise on anything, and no authority is going to haul someone in, against their wishes, for fear of breaking some kind of rule of people's freedom or anything. For all the warnings Cho gave out, nobody was willing to insist that he be taken in for evaluation and NOT LET GO until they knew once and for ALL that this guy was not a threat to others first and foremost. There were many reports of people's discomfort and fear of this guy, and the instincts were there. He wasn't doing anything illegal, they say, so authorities could do NOTHING!!!! This is where things need to change. Everytime these killings have taken place, the hindsight comes clear, the signs pop out all over the place, they were troubled and could be seen doing something so tragically....he even admitted the hundred billion signs..PLEASE authorities, PLEASE LISTEN to the people who come to you with these kind of reports, and stop worrying about the impacts on your fine establishments...it could save a lot of lives in the future. Its about time people that stand out like this, with these social disorders, get SEVERAL evaluations, wheather or not they refuse it. Their "rights" and sick calls for help, can affect many lives, as we are seeing way way too much of. Why wasn't he put on leave of absense and refused access to the campus, with all these reports? I'd hate to be responsible for brushing off ANY of these reports. God Bless you.
