Another Day, Another Lawsuit Against Big Pharma Over Marketing Atypicals

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania sued the makers of Zyprexa, Risperdal and Seroquel on February 26, it was reported last week:

"Lilly, based in Indianapolis, hid the risks and exaggerated the benefits of its antipsychotic medication Zyprexa while persuading doctors to prescribe it for unapproved uses, the state said. London-based AstraZeneca PLC's U.S. unit did the same for its drug Seroquel and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Pharmaceutical unit for Risperdal, Pennsylvania claimed in a Feb. 26 complaint."

Lilly has denied the accusations.

Lilly has been sued by five states over Zyprexa, J&J twice and AZ once. Most of the attention seems to be focused on the use of these drugs in the elderly. Kind of makes me wonder how many more lawsuits would result if states took a look at how these companies may have marketed their atypicals for use in bipolar disorder.

So when is the mainstream media going to get busy and start connecting the dots on these drugs and their makers? As I have pointed out before, there are dots that need to be connected--and it ain't that hard if I can do it. And I have.

Hm, leaked Zyprexa court documents. Multiple state lawsuits. Multiple individual lawsuits outstanding. FDA official says his agency should investigate these drugs further. Public health concerns. Drugs taken by maybe 10 million Americans. Were supposedly the wonder drugs, the silver bullet. Sometimes given out as sleeping pills.

Nah, couldn't possibly be a story in that.

I work in a hospital. Seroquel is often given for agitation. Most of the patients I see being given this med are not bipolar or schizophrenic - they are elderly folks with confusion and agitation.

What? You mean the state of Pennsylvania finally did something--anything--that wasn't idiotic?

(I can say it because I live there.)

Seems people are either in love with Seroquel or give it up as hopeless. Granted, my slice of life is not as large as the researchers', but Seroquel is apparently fabulous at knocking your brain down into a quivering mass of Jell-o, but not so wonderful at relieving depression or giving you any enthusiasm for life. The latter has been my experience. I've been on it 2 months and I'm ready to toss it overboard and try something else, like, gosh, an antidepressant. Pretty wild idea, huh?
