The Zyprexa Chronicles: Gottstein And Egilman

Two of the central figures in the Zyprexa documents case are Jim Gottstein and David Egilman. Gottstein is a lawyer in Alaska who does tons of pro bono work on behalf of psych patients, and Egilman is a doctor and professor at Brown University who is often an expert witness in product liability lawsuits against Big Pharma. I don't know much about Egilman beyond that, but Pharmalot has a good post on his background.

I won't replay who did what to get the documents to the public. Following yesterday's federal court ruling, however, both Gottstein and Egilman face potentially serious court-imposed sanctions. Egilman reportedly has a big shot law firm back East defending him for free. Gottstein, who is expected to appeal the ruling against him, has another lawyer in Anchorage helping him out. It is not clear what kind of sanctions Eli Lilly's lawyers will seek or what the judge in the case will impose. Gottstein could face a huge fine and face potential criminal proceedings.

He is a former psych patient--he calls himself an "escapee"--and has written about his experiences compellingly. A legal defense fund has been established to raise money for his defense:

"Jim Gottstein Legal Defense Fund c/o Dominick Riccio, Ph.D. 1036 Park Avenue, Suite 1B New York, NY 10028"

As Lilly likes to maintain the appearance of being squeeky clean, publicity from these cases with probably cause further headaches in Indianapolis.

I have been researching Jim Gottstein for quite some time re: his associations with those who are manipulating the mental health care system in Alaska. He actively and knowingly defied Judge Weinsteins order and should be punished accordingly. Then, he should be disbarred. This guy is a fanatic and deserves no money from the public for his defense. I'm sure he can turn to all his friends associated with the Alaska Mental Health Board, the Alaska Mental Health Land Trust, Langdon Clinic, and numerous granting bodies with whom he has formed close alliances over the years.

Kevin--

Until YOU are on the receiving end of bad medical care, you can lawyer-bash all you want. At what point do you think ethics and/or morality trumps corporate power? When doctors, healthcare professionals, advocacy groups, etc are unwilling to step up to the plate to expose what is immoral at best, and in all likelihood is actually criminal behavior, who is left to speak for the patients who have been harmed. Corporations want to have it both ways--the RIGHTS of personhood, with none of the attendant responsibilities. They are more than happy, through legal maneuvering, to stifle such information (injunctions, non-disclosure clauses, etc.)

What's the matter: did your Lilly shares take a hit? Or did you lose you big Zyprexa account?

One voice can make a difference, Melody, thank you for being vocal.

We ARE in a mental health crisis in America, and it's about time that it gets the same coverage as AIDS, breast cancer, etc.

For the love of God, people are DYING as a result of trying to find a quality life; and psych meds are being given to people as the "only treatment", and those medications have DEATH as a side effect.

I refuse to stop.

Stephany--

Thanks for the heads-up. I came here following the Zyprexa issue. Anything that shines sunlight on Eli Lilly grabs my attention. Although I sympathize with the mental health issues (I'm a former SSRI consumer), my underlying issue is the mistreatment of diabetics by Lilly and medical professionals (with the adjunct cast of characters ranging from advocacy groups to government enablers.) My husband wrote a book entitled Too Profitable to Cure that talks about this abuse. Since his experience and knowledge was based on diabetes, the book APPEARS to be about diabetes. But the overarching themes apply across a multiplicity of diseases--including mental illness.

When CL Psy wrote last night (commenting on Philip's podcast)that a Lilly spokesman said the disease (mental illness), not Zyprexa caused diabetes, it was SO-O-O evident that there is a designed script to divert attention from corporate wrongdoing. Unfortunately, there are so many health issues that need addressing that patients' concerns are diluted, and each group (regardless of group size or disease) focuses on its chief concerns. Consequently, ALL of us suffer by this dilution. You want support and attention for mental health; I want support/attention for diabetes; AIDS, stem cell, cancer--all have similar issues. Until all of us can coalesce to demand fair treatment that does no harm, I don't know how we can truly impact the system. Like you said, I guess we just keep on raising one voice at a time.
