I Love Celebrity Gossip!!!

OK, no I don't. But there's a bit more info on the Britney Spears situation. From TMZ.com, the most-trusted news source on Earth, comes a report that Spears' erratic behavior isn't being driven by booze and drugs--darn!!!--but is instead a function of either post-partum depression or bipolar disorder. I am so not surprised by this.

I wonder what Tom Cruise will make of this. Maybe TMZ.com can find out what couch he'll be bouncing on next.

Inevitably, some readers will wonder if Spears is taking meds that are turning her all goofy as well. No news on that front.

(Hat tip: Celebrity Baby Blog. I cannot believe I just credited a celebrity baby blog. Bizarre as it might sound, it's one of the most popular blogs on the Internets.)

According to Hollyscoop.com Britney Spears was seen in the ladies room at some celebrity eatery opening her bag which "looked like a pharmacy" and consuming Paxil and Xanax on the spot. Now of course we don't know how reliable that is but in another posting they say she's reading what I have called a paeon to Paxil, Brooke Shields' book on PPD. Britney may have PPD, but if she's "bipolar" how do we know, please, that it hasn't been induced by Paxil and a whole host of other drugs she's probably on? The epidemic of bipolar that's going on in this country, if it is even a real "disease", is frequently antidepressant-induced. A great many ER admissions for mania and psychosis are acknowledged to be antidepressant-induced. And we're not talking about "uncovering" some pre-existing condition, we are talking about something that has been caused by treatment, the fancy name for which is "iatrogenesis". Sure, Britney probably has issues resulting from having children but that sure doesn't mean Paxil should be or should have been prescribed. Brooke Shields was hopelessly naive in her book describing her intensely suicidal reaction to an abrupt withdrawal from Paxil as if it were her "disorder" -- it was classic Paxil withdrawal behavior. If Britney is now manic and hopefully not psychotic I for one believe it's drug induced or certainly drug exacerbated. And please let it be known that Brooke decided to pass on the antidepressants after her second kid.

Exactly, Sara.

I don't think she has a postpartum depression. She has a problem with drugs or alcohol.
